which motor

Hey guys, I've put my mustang project off long enough. I'm getting ready to decide on which drive train to use. This 69 coupe has its original 250 straight 6 an c-4. I have a 67 390, with a c-6 tranny or a 67 4 speed trans an bell housing. My next choice is to rebuild a 66 289 with a c-4 trans, I can also get a 3 spd. manual trans with over drive. Both engines need rebuilds. My buddy has a 5.0 out of a 90 Lincoln, says its a roller motor with a bell housing. He also has an 83? 351 Cleveland motor that has a crank kit fresh heads with around 3,000 miles since rebuild.I would like to use a manual transmission, I have found a clutch pedal. What engine combo would be the best for an everyday driver, with a little grunt, Car will be used to an from work an some small trips not on the track. Thanks Neil74

Re: which motor

If you want cool build the crap out of the 250.

If you want what everyone else already has go 289 or 390...

I already know what the rest of these folks are going to say...

Re: which motor

The 250 is a waste of time in my opinion..It will cost a small fortune to end up with the power of a near stock V-8....What are you looking for out of the car?..A 390 would be a cool motor and a good performer but is a pretty tight squeeze in a mustang..They were factory installed so parts are available but expensive.....The 289 would be good for basic transportation but nothing too exciting in a 69 unless built up....A 5.0 would be a better choice...The cleveland motor was only built from 70-74 so your buddy either has the year wrong or its a M 351 which is more of a truck motor and was never installed in a mustang...The 3 speed overdrive trans is not a very good one for performance as it is weak...The 67 trans would be a good one assuming it is a toploader...It sounds like for what you want a nicely built 5.0 with a T-5 out of a 5.0 mustang would be a nice fit and get good gas mileage as well...

Re: which motor

390 and the 4 speed! but hop that 390 up a bit. I've had 2 station wagons, a 64 Pontiac Catalina with a 389 and a 68 ford county sedan with a 390. The Poncho was so much faster its not even funny. So with your 390 do a little head work, headers, nice cam, good carb ect. and you will be in business. But the "stock" 390's were not that great (they do have lots of potential though).
