Backspacing vs Offset

I have a 66 coupe and want to put 17x8 and use a 235/45/17 tire. Everything I have read says to get 4.75 bs. The company I was looking at for rims uses offset. What offset would I need? I was thinking 6mm. I was looking at cruzin concepts but I might just have to get American racing so I know I get the the right size. Please help!
