HOW TO CHANGE A STARTER ON A 302 MUSTANG II

I JUST CHANGED OUT MY 2.8 V6 TO A 302..WAS WONDERING IS THERE A WAY OF CHANGING THE STARTER WITHOUT TAKING THE WHOLE ENGINE OUT? THAT HAD TO BE DONE SINCE THE ONE ON MY ENEGINE CRAPED OUT...WASN'T TOO BAD SINCE THE HEADS WERE LEAKING AND THE ENGINE HAD TO COME OUT ANYWAYS...BUT JUST WONDERING IF THERE IS A BETTER WAY...I HAVE HEADERS AND THEY WILL COOK THE STARTER DURING THE SUMMER MOST LIKELY...

THANKS

YO STEVE

I've never had much trouble removing the starter from a 302 while in the car. It can be tough if it is a stock starter (but then you are better off to replace it with a newer one when it dies anyway, much lighter and take the heat better). At worst your may want to loosen the header on that side a little, but you probably dont need to. Just don't mess up and drop it on your head like I did one time. Especially when your hand is at strange angles to get it out those stock starters are heavy.

I used 2 long extensions on mine and went in from the front on top. That gets the top bolt. Had to do the bottom from underneith. Like MJ said, don't drop it!!

I also used 2 long extensions on mine but i couldn't get it out after that. I had to take out the engine mount on the one side and put a jack under the oil pan and just lifted the engine enough to get the starter out. It was quit a pain in the ass. Make sure that you put blocks or sum kind of support under the engine because if the jack fails it will crush you hand!
