Mustang II axle swap

I want to convert to 5 lug axles on my 1976 Cobra II . Does anyone know of any axles that are a direct bolt on swap into the II housing? Any help or information on this swap is greatly appreciated.

Re: Mustang II axle swap

I have the axles from a maverick in my 77. Not done with the project and don't have the brake drums for it yet. If I remember correctly I had to use the Mustang bearing retainer so it would bolt to the axle housing and open up the center slightly so it wouldn't rub on the axle. Both rears were 8". I was thinking the early Ranger brake drums would work but haven't got that far.

I'm using 76 Granada axles with the Mustang II retainers.

Did you purchase you axles from Accu Auto? Were the Granada axles a bolt on swap or did you have to make any modification? What did you do to change the front to 5 lug? Thanks for any and all information on the project from you and 5851a. Need all the help and input that I can get.

I purchased the axles from Accu Auto. They must be trimmed to match the length of the existing axles, otherwise they bolt right using the old Mustang II retainers and new bearings. I trimmed the length using my abrasive chop saw ground a chamfer on the end with my bench grinder, then cleaned them up with a flat file. If you find used Granada axles, they are the correct length and will not need to be shortened.

Rear drums are for a 1983 Ford Ranger pickup:

The front is 5-lug 11" Granada rotors with GM calipers and a bracket kit. This is the same as the kit I have:

eBay Motors: MUSTANG II CALIPERS & BRACKETS 11" BIG BRAKE CONVERSION (item 170275107415 end time Nov-27-08 22:48:04 PST)

Have not installed these yet. I still need to order the front hoses.

I used this as a guide:

Re: Mustang II axle swap

Thanks for the information. Very helpful, but did you have to change any of the rear brake hardware, shoes, backplate, or anything else when using the Ranger rear drums? Thanks again for the info and help.

Re: Mustang II axle swap

put a 9" in if you're going through the trouble. I used a '77 Bronco unit and all I had to do was move the perches. Many early car 9" units are the correct width.

Any 64-66 Mustang is the same drum to druma dn perch to
perch measured axle as a MII. Meaning that the axles will directly
replace for length and fit. find a 5 lug 64-66 Mustang or 63-67 falcon,
or newer Versilles amnd get the axles, brake backing plates, drums and
shoes and you are done.
