GT-40 cams? Cobra/Explorer

Hello, I just picked up a 40k milage Explorer GT-40 motor (not a P motor) Anyone know if the cam is the same or simular to the cam found in the Cobra motors? I plan on doing a refresh of the short block and a port match to the heads/ Explorer intake. I'm thinking the cam may be simular to a B303? Any info on this motor would be great! Thanks! -Scott

No the cam is different; in fact the B cam is also different from the 93 Cobra cam.

Is it a usable (read upgrade) from the stock cam in my 92 HO motor with a manual, or better to get a B or E cam? (Is it junk?) Any idea about rockers on these heads?

This is according to the Official Mustang 5.0 Tech reference manual. I'm on page 228 where there is a chart describing cam applications from 85 thru 98, non HO, HO, Cobra, and Truck cams. The HO is different from the Cobra, which is different from the truck cam. As to whether its junk, hardly. I matches the firing order of that motor, and it gives torque specific for the operation of the weight of that vehicle. The chart gives the lift, duration event phasing, overlap, lobe centers, etc. Base truck and HO motors use 1.6 ratio rocker arms, 93 Cobras use a 1.7 ratio. One truck cam uses slightly more overlap than the other, and the Cobra falls in between. Truck lift is slightly less than the cars on intake, but between the Cobra and HO on exhaust. Duration, is less on intake and same on exhaust. Event phasing is drastically different on intake and almost same on exhaust. Overlap is much less on the truck. Lobe centers are similar on the HO and truck, vastly different on the Cobra. Note, when I say different, its within a few thou, vastly different, and I mean a bunch. It would take a while to transfer all the data into a post on this link... but the above is the just of it. None of the data says anything about firing order being different on the truck or not or what truck firing order is. HO firing order is: 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Check your Explorer to see if its same.

Personally if it came down to an Explorer cam, Cobra cam, or Stock H.O. cam, I would take the H.O. cam. The cobra cam is essentially a T-Bird cam. It has less lift than the HO cam when used with 1.6 rockers (which is why Ford used 1.7 rockers on the cobra.) The HO cam is a great cam, and if you can put 1.7 rockers with it even better. If you are going to spend money on a good used cam, sure a B or E cam or a Crane 2031 are decent choices.

Wow! Thats great info guys!! I just joined and have already gotten my moneys worth!!! Thats great rocker ratio info also, I had always thought that the Mustang 5.0 motors had 1.5 ratio. I just learned something new today!!
I hope that with all the Fox body Mustangs that I have had over the years I'll know something that could help someone else also! I know PLENTY of you have this many Stangs right now, but lets see... My first was a 1979 Mustang coupe with ghia interior, those metric wheels, and the Turbo 4 cyl.. I wish that that car was around still, but I totalled it! (hey, I was only 16) The Mustang bug had already bit hard when I got a 82 GT (in 1985) Drove that car untill I was able to get a 88 GT (in 89). Crashed it drag racing a Camero! They fixed it but it was not right after that! Traded it in on a 90 GT, but my insuranse was throught the roof by then. Then in my early 30's, I had to have another a so I picked up a 92 GT! Thats the one I have now! I've had it for about 4 years without crashing it, Its funny how age changes you! I don't get out to Milan Dragway anymore and stret racing just ain't my thing, My goals with it are pure handling and kick in the pants fun. Its geting there, but we all know, it will never be done!!! Plus my brother in law has a 440 "Cuda" that he thinks is so fast!, yeh, it'll run a twelve, but will it turn a corner without rolling over?
