Question Timing a 91 302

Need help on timing A 302 out of a 91 Mustang. It is being put in a mazda miata. I have put a carb setup on engine, and using the original timing cover. This is my first time working on a ford engine. The timing cover doesn't have a timing tab like a chevy.
Can someone tell me if I am missing something or how to get started on the timing. This has been a learn as you go project.
Any help would be appreciated.

The timing pointers bolt on to the drivers side of the timing cover. Not an easy part to find unless you want to buy a 60 dollar one from summit

Maybe mine has been changed. Mine is on the passenger side of the timing cover.

Re: Timing a 91 302

on a 91 5.0 motor they are on the passenger side thats bolted on by the two botton bolts of the timing cover, and the number 1 piston is on the passenger side to.. just get the piston at compresion top dead and point the rotor to the #1 spark plug post on the cap and then you should be in the money.. but you will need a timing pointer to advance it because those engines run about 12 dagree advance good luck
