83 5.0 Mustang Starter Problem

My son is trying to get his Mustang started, It has sat for about 13 months.
He put in a new, Batt & replaced the Solinoid and the starter. it has power and kicks out the bendix gear but wont turn over the motor. Any of you ran into this problem yet?

Thanks, Dave

Just brainstormin'.... have you checked to see if the engine might have "frozen"? Put it in gear, if its a stick, see if you can push it, that will move the engine (if the clutch is still good).

Alternative: get a good size 3 foot long breaker over bar and proper size socket - this time with the transmission in neutral - see if you can turn the crank, only need to move it once around. After that see if it cranks.

Is it possible that the starter is bad or the flywheel ring gear is toothless? If it energizes the starter It probably isn't the solenoid

Grounds all Clean and Good? May not be getting enough power to the starter.

New Battery doesn't mean its good need to check the voltage on it too.

Also check the resistance in the cables, they go bad sometimes too.

Re: 83 5.0 Mustang Starter Problem

I told him to try turning the motor over by hand....but I not sure he has tools to do it. ( he Lives with his mom and they dont have much in the way of tools) I also told him to try rocking the car while in gear to see if the motor turns over. So maybe he will get to try it today before he goes into work.

I also told him to check the grounds make sure they are clean and making a good connection. I will ask him if he put new cables on. I dont remember if he said he changed them yet or not.

Thanks for the info.

Have or help him pull the spark plugs, spray some CRC,WD40, or PB BLASTER in the cylinders, let it sit for a few hours, then crank with no plugs (disconnect coil to be safe) I have seen many a broken piston ring from rust in cylinders.
