Unfortunately, the cheap stuff doesn't do much. However, you can upgrade the suspension components for relatively cheap and get better hook-ups and better cornering out of it. Other, the best bang for you buck "power wise" are gears.

Re: more performance

Don't forget a CAI and a tune or chip. Of course you can work on headers and exhaust but other than that it starts to get pricey....

Re: more performance

CAI is worth nothing on the 96-04 cars. Maybe 5 hp tops. You're better off just dropping in a K&N filter and removing the silencer. Tunes on the other hand are kind of the same story unless you start making serious mods or want to run on 93. As for headers, $500+ (never mind if you want someone else to do it) and they get expensive fast.

Re: more performance

headers... what a nightmare and its very expensive. unless you want real power just do a catback but nothing is cheap. there is an article called o1gt in the project cars. good research is the cheapest way

Re: more performance

+1 on gears. Biggest bang for the buck on these cars.

Go Ford brand for the best bet on them running quietly.

Not really power improvements, but I also suggest weld-in subframe connectors and a good aftermerket shifter for 5-speed cars (Pro-5.0 or Steeda).

Have you checked the stop bolts on the shifter? Sounds like they the top one needs turned in a little more.
