99 cobra advice

I'm in the process of looking for a new daily driver. Is a 99 cobra a decent choice? I've read that they are supposed to get 17/26 mpg - what do you owners get in mixed driving? Also, how reliable are they and how long will they last? Sorry for all the questions, thanks for the help.

Re: 99 cobra advice

It's a nice car, with IRS, big brakes, etc., but a lot of people were dissapointed with the power output.

They're perfectly reliable in stock trim, but adding a power-adder really wakes up the 4-valve motor...exposing a lot of weak links (shortblock [rods & pistons], IRS, and trans).

Another, simpler option to liven them up is gearing, as the 4-valve motors like to rev, but either option will effect your mileage concerns.

My advice: Test drive before you buy.

Re: 99 cobra advice

Well I do not own a Cobra but I do own an 01 GT that is my driver. The 4.6 runs as strong at 80K miles as it did when I bought it new. The only modifications Ive made to it engine wise are a BBK cold air kit, underdrive pulleys and purchased a performace tuner off Ebay. I get 19-20 city and 22-28 hwy of course driving conditions and how heavy my foot is always affects the mileage.

Re: 99 cobra advice

I've owned a 97 and now an 03. A friend of mine owned an 01 and I have driven an 01 vert. I've heard the 99s were down on power unless they had the recall done to them. The 01 I drove was really nice.

I put gears, cold air, underdrive and cat back into my 97 and dropped 7 tenths in the quarter and it still was easy to drive on the street. It also got around 23-25mpg on the highway with 4.10's. This car had 95k miles before my ex wife blew the engine from excessive drag racing. I know it would have gone well into the 100ks if it were not abused for so many years. For a daily driver the 01 would be really nice. I wish I could have bought that vert.
