Tremec 3650 clutch fork question.

I just bought a Ford clutch fork (7515-A) for my Tremec 3650. It's pretty heavy (5 pounds??) because it has a large weight bolted onto it. Does anyone know a good reason for the weight? I thought about taking it off, but wasn't sure if that was good idea.
The only thing that comes to my mind is that it may help prevent the clutch from engaging too quickly.
Any ideas anyone??
