Question Re: Power stering location

If you are referring to the pump, it is on the left front of the engine. It should have a small dipstick sticking out of the filler neck.

Thanks, what kind of fluid do i need, how much do i add, do i need the car on, etc?

Also the quick lube guy said that there was a leak from a gasket, how can i check this or observe power steering leaks before having a expensive inspection. I'm a poor college student, and will soon move out of walking range to work and class.

its a '77

Re: Power stering location

If the inspection guy says you have a leak I garauntee you its leaking for the steering box. This is mounted on the drivers side frame rail directly below the brake master cylinder. Do not worry about this leak, almost every car from this era (72-79) leaks from the steering box and there isnt a alot you can do about it except change the box out. generic steering fluid will work, heck in a pinch I hear you can even use automatic transmission fluid. Just fill up the resivor once a week and you should be good.

Re: Power stering location

Thanks,

How does filling the pump motor fill the gear box? The pump you mentioned looke likeaan alernator and just connects to a belt unless I missed something. It does have a 2 or 3 inch stick and says to 'check hot'.

Also what is a reasobnale amount to pay for a radaiator repair / replacment? Mine seems to have a few mystery leaks running the legenth of the unit, that didnt show up till a week after the flush even though i didnt run the car.

thanks.

Re: Power steering location

Try using some K&W power steering/ auto. trans fluid with stop leak. It has a seal softener in it, and can also quiet a noisy pump. It's available at all parts stores, and has a money-back guarantee. If your fluid is dark, siphon it out and refill with the K&W. I've used this stuff for 30 years, it works!
Good luck. JD

Re: Power steering location

I gotta stop you right now if you look on most dip sticks for power steering pumps they list using Automatic Transmission Fluid for older cars like yours man so just use some ATF and you will be AOK

Re: Power stering location

I was told that i probably need a gearbox replacement. He said that on a shaft thing where there is a seal a grove commonly develops, and generates a leak. There used to be a repair kit, but unless you put it on super perfect, it wont last and you have to do it again.

The leak comes out on to the exhaust, and im halfway down on fluid.

Is just filling it an option till i can get a 'kit' or a rebuilt box, and what is the max time i should 'just fill it'?

Thanks a lot
