78 Ranchero with a 400M

Got a 78 ranchero with a lack luster 400M engine in it. Got a couple of ideas to gain performance but something that came across my mind when looking around on the web was the ford 3x2 (tripower) carb setup. On one particlar website they had a 351C with a tripower. Now I know that the 351c, the 351M and the 400M are all very similar. So my questions is could I put a 3x2 carb setup on my 400M engine? Thanks appreciated it.

Re: 78 Ranchero with a 400M

Yes you could but whats the point ?? In order for it to do any real good you would need to do cam , valve train, heads etc . Have you even looked at the cost of a 3 duce setup ?? Please don't take this post wrong I'm not or don't intend for it to be a bashing post just want you to think a while on what your thinking about . If all else is left stock adding carbs and such isn't going to do much good . Sure you can put a 4 barrel carb and intake on it with a good tune and see some improvement but 3 duces not goint to happen ... IMO

He's right, Get some early 351c 2v heads as they flow better, A 4v intake manifold and carb,Roller rockers, More cam {with consideration for your compression ratio} An electric fan will help too.... There are a lot of little things that will really wake up the 400. I did all of these things to a '73 351c and it was a different motor when I was done.

I for sure understand what you guys are saying about first putting in a better cam, valve train, heads and roller rockers for performance. (Which I am planning on doing and should have said in my first post) I guess what I am trying to ask is if you built up two almost identical 400M for performance and only thing different between the two engines were a 4v intake + carb compared to a 3x2 setup would the power be worth the extra cost and time?

In a nutshell- Would the juice be worth the squeeze?

NO it wouldn't in my book . To me the 3x2 that I have messed with was a PITA !! Also you don't have the intake choices you do with a 4V intake .
