62 Ranchero Transmission Questions
I have a '62 Ranchero with the factory 170 ci. motor and the three speed tranny has been converted to floor shift. My question is I want to install a five speed trans. in place of the fatory three speed. What trans should I use and what about which bell housing do I hunt for? Can I use a T-5 tranny? Any advise or help to get me stated in the right direction would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks,

Most of the shifting gear on the column units went bad by the 1970's when zero parts were around. Thus no doubt someone hacked through the floor and installed a common floor shifter.
Good luck in finding a tranny to mate up. You got a five bolt or a six bolt bellhousing?

Re: 62 Ranchero Transmission Questions
Thanks for the reply, I'll know this weekend if the bell housing is a five or six bolt pattern. Since I posted my question I have destroyed my engine, dropped the exhaust valve on the #2 cylinder and blew three holes in the block. I will be picking up a newish 200 ci w/ 3 speed tranny tonight so as soon as I can get around this computer I'll let you know on the bell housing's bolt pattern. Thanks again for the reply.

Re: 62 Ranchero Transmission Questions
The bell housing you need is the 67 Mustang Bell housing, but you gotta have a 66 on up block in order to put it on your engine.
The T-5 will work perfectly. I did a writeup on it a while back, and there is no need to bang the firewall.

The newish six cylinder engines are those that have seven main bearings. I am getting about 30 MPG out of the 200 mine right now. Only a few things on the late 200 interchage with the earlier 170 engine, none of which are internal. I got three friends with a 200 in their earlier Rancheros.

Re: 62 Ranchero Transmission Questions
O.K. so I was a little mislead on the 200 cid, the T on the vin turned out to be a U, and as it turned I now have another 170. Anyways it appears to be in really good shape, lets hope it holds up for the winter. The 170 came with another three speed side load style transmission. Both bell housings have the same 4 bolt pattern that mate up to the engine, so it's back to the drawing board to try and come up with some type of an overdrive transmission.

Re: 62 Ranchero Transmission Questions
Ford falcons never utilized a Side Load tranny. They were all top loaders, but not the toploader famous in the Galaxies and Fairlanes.
The 200 CI engine will have 5 freeze plugs on the passenger side of the block, the 170 will not.

I got a side loading tranny out back. They are not as strong or popular as the full syncro tranys were. But they were made. I got a booklet on how to adapt a Fenton floor shifter to one also.
For 1964 and 1965, they had a couple of intermediate engines used in Falcon. One of which was the four main 200 inch engine. From outside it "looked like" a 170 inch engine. And thus does not have same core plug count.
