Re: 1940 ford pick up
I have a 351W in a 1939 Ford Coupe, a 302 Ford Racing Crate in a 1939 Ford Convertable, a 351 C 4-v and Toploader in a 1939 Ford Sedan Delivery and I sold a few years back a 1940 Ford Coupe with a 429 and C-6.
The P/U is about the same install as cars, the chassis is the same as is the basic front end. The Mustang 2 IFS really helps with the Ford in a Ford install. My 315W and C-4 in my 1939 Ford Coupe is a straight axel car the other M-2. The stock x member really gets in the way and it is hard to get the engine low enough in the chassis. The rear sump pan helps also - I used on off a van - but Fox body Mustangs work. The fire wall need set back some - but nothing drastic on a 302 - the 302 is easier to fit than 351W - little narrower. I recommend 302 if you want more cubes - go 347 vs bigger 351W block. Buy a Walker Radiatior first with the A/C condenser built it - mount it first, then set in the engine with block hugger headers and steering in place with a pillow block and inset firewall to fit. Ford Motor Sports has a v belt water pump and pulley set that shortangs 1 1/2 inches. I have this kit on the 351W and 302 engines. Some people use the reverse single belt with sucess. I prefer manual fan with shroud from Walker and 6 or 7 blade 17 to 19 inch flex fan.
I have learned the hard way - start from the front a work back. Do not get hung up about cutting the firewall. and do not worry if the engine sets a little off center to the passinger side. The 429 was a real job. The floor mounted brake petal had to moved some - it hit the bellhousing. I will never do a 429 again - just too big and heavy and a stroker 351W will run as well for much less weight and size. Good luck.
