Rebuild 351W - Combo Feedback

I am about to embark on a rebuild of a 1974 351W. Please provide feedback on the following combo, specifically if the package works with the Cam. I don't want to spend more than $2,500 on this and I want to build a beastly daily driver (maybe 400HP).

1974 351W +.040"
Stock 351W Crankshaft
Stock 351W Connecting Rods
ARP Connecting Rod Bolts
Summit Racing Rebuild Kit (SpeedPro Hyper Skirted Pistons)
AFR 185cc SBF Outlaw Heads
Edelbrock Performer Intake
Holley 4160 Adjustable Float (600 cfm)
COMP Cams 35-234-3 (212int/218exh @ .050"; .477int./.484exh lift; 110 separation) - Hydraulic Flat Tappet

Thanks!

Why not go with the Edelbrock RPM Air-Gap? A much better intake manifold...

That's a good question...

1) I am new to this.
2) I found a Performer Intake for $75
3) Do I need a bigger manifold with the AFR 185s?

I really appreciate the heads up.

I would go a little bigger on the camshaft as well..What's the rest of the combo?

I agree on a better manifold. I would also suggest getting a carb that is designed for street performance. Some 4160's are emissions type carbs. Check on the application for the part # of the one you are wanting.

Bigger to me translates into more duration, correct? It seems like the 'bigger' cams give more HP at the high RPMs, but I will be driving this around San Francisco all the time. I am trying to get as much low-end torque as possible which is why I thought the smaller, street-specific Performer/AFR combo worked well together. What other parts of the combo are you asking about? Springs and lifters? I have been focusing on the camshaft so much that I haven't even gotten into the rest...

On the carburetion front, I didn't want to overdo it with a big carb. I know that I could build a 408 stroker with a 1000cfm carb, but I am trying to keep this engine within limits. If this carb isn't ideal, any other recommendations?

Thank you guys so much.

Re: Rebuild 351W - Combo Feedback

You have a good set of heads that should work really well with that 351. I agree with maybe needing a little more cam and the RPM intake. Top it off with something like a Demon 650 carb, a good 2.5" exhaust, and that should be a good running engine!

As frdnut asked, what's the rest of the car like?

If you have any doubts at all about the cam, just call up Joe Sherman Racing and he'll have the right cam, lifters, and springs drop-shipped from Comp right to your door!

On the carb, just saying get one designed for the application. 600 is fine for a street build and how it is set up will make a difference. Get your final combo on paper and then buy one that will work with it.

Re: Rebuild 351W - Combo Feedback

Here is an update to my combo:

1979 351W +.040"
AFR 185CC SBF Outlaw Heads
Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap Intake Manifold
Edelbrock Performer RPM Cam 7182 (224/234 @ .050" lift; .496/.520 lift; 110 LSA)

Question: Any advice on a carb? I have read so much stuff from putting an 850cfm double pumper mechanical secondary, to a 600cfm vacuum secondary...

This car is going to be a daily driver.

You have a nice combo going there, but there are much better cams available than the Edelbrocks. Since you said that you are new at this, call up Joe Sherman Racing and have him sell you the right cam for your combo. That would eliminate all the guesswork. He is priced in line with other suppliers and you get the benefit of his expertise. He may have a few other good suggestions for your build as well.
Joe Sherman Racing - Welcome
