393 is my bet, cheap and you can get 500 out of one and expect the engine to last a good long while.
Another one to consider is the 410 or 416, both good long rod motors. Not overly exspensive to build.
I tried to keep things well within my skill level and my ability to do the work myself. Some will have shops do all of the work, others have my skill and then some just a couple of things to consider..

The 393 or 408 is not much more than building a 351W, but you'll need to notch the piston skirts a bit for the rod bolts (no biggie). I think if you go over that c.i., more machine work and therefore $ is needed. However, when you start talking about supercharging and/or NOS, you'll need to consider buying top dollar parts so you don't blow the thing up, and then that gets quite pricey + the cost of the supercharger, etc. I think if you had a 408 with some good aftermarke heads, you'd have more power than you'd ever want. They can be scary.

whats a good stroker motor for the bucks
Hey guys,
I have been researching 393 strokers also. This guy at "Indy Mustang" will sell me a 393 Stroker with scat crank, keith black pistons, iron heads, all being forged components, for $3,500. He says the life span of the 347 and the 408 are short lived engines. The 393 COULD be a 100,000 mile motor IF driven friendly! To hell with that! 393 has less modification to build, and is the most bang for the buck stroker out there. I told him I had 31" tall tires and 433:1 gears, he told me wheelstands and low 11's. I figure a Taxcheck, and a shoehorn, and I am in! He also claimed that he HAS fit a 351 block in a '65 Falcon (NO MII) without too much work.
L8R,
Rick

Mark,
Tell me what you've heard. I have read more good posts than bad. What scared you off from these guys? I would like to know.
Thanks,
Rick

Dont cheap out on a junk kit. If you want a 393, dont use stock rods and 302 pistons! Stock rods suck at 500hp and the 302 pistons will need the skirts cut. Do buy I or H beam rods, and get the correct pistons, cast cranks will be fine for 500hp. A chevy rod journal size is a plus, as there is more rod size verity out there to choose from to get the perfect comp height.
For a 408+ci you should fine a crank that uses chevy sized rod journals to free up extra clearence for the rotating assembly and to prevent cam clearence issues with monster cam lobes, you still need to grind the block but not near as much as using the standard ford rod journal. Plus, with the chevy journal the crank will weight less and balance easier with the 28oz instead of using the heavier 50oz stuff.

Is it true that on a long rod 408, the pistons you have to use have the wrist pin cut into the oil control ring? I had a 383 Rag-o-let that used a quart of oil every 120 miles that had the same type of piston setup, so I'm very leery of a piston setup that cuts into the oil ring lands. I've been looking at the CHP 408 street fighter pro (not sure if I got the name of the kit right, but it's the middle kit with the forged crank), but It's got to be reliable & I absolutely don't want my wrist pin cutting into my oil lands.
P.S. Y'all need to crank this forum up a bit...bunch of snoozers.

Chilly - Thanks for the response. I'm really torn between building a 383 vs. 408. I'm not afraid of having to gring on the block to create reliefs for the rod bolts, what I'm afraid of, with the 408, is having an engine that I can't take out on the road. It's 50 miles to the dragstrip (Silver Dollar Raceway - Reynolds Ga - Yeehaw). do you consider your pistons short enough to have a 'side load' problem, where they want to rock in the bores? What are CH pistons? Coast High/Probe??

Chilly - Thanks again for the response, you sound like you know what you're doing. You can probably tell by my questions that I'm new to stroker science, but I'm fixin to fittna, as we say here in Ga)jump in with both feet. Why did you choose the 6.250 rod? I'm looking at the CoastHigh.com Streetfighter Pro Street kits. The 408 is only $100 more than the 393. Both kits have forged crank, pistons, and rods. I need for it to be as bullet proof as possible as I'm planning to use a 5 speed manual (missed gears, high rpm launches...).
