331/347 rehash

I just reread the articles on the 331 buildup in "Mustangs and Fords" June and July 2003. Looking at their final results I was amazed at just how much torque they got out of that motor. My question is does anyone have some numbers on doing the same build up using the same parts only putting the test to a 347? Is there that much difference? Also after reading everyones opinion on oil consumption and the 347 would you guys back off and go with the 331 for a daily driver?

Going for a 347 stroker in a daily driver is never a good idea. I would only use a 347 if it were for racing and liked taking my engine apart more than usual. The 347 has such a big stroke, that the piston pin acctually ends up about a quarter to a half inch higher on the piston than a 331. That makes the pin interfere with the piston rings. Therefore I woudn't recommend it. Just my .02 ...

Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!

you are wrong. Sorta.

The 347 ring/piston designs now dont intersect the pin. But they are harder on the rings due to the sidewall loading, so the 331 would be better for an engine thats not going to be freshened now and then.

you will get a little more tq with the 347 then you would with a 331. the power would be all most the same

a 347 has no longevity issues....its a myth

the pin does intersect the oil ring land/grove,at least it did on my kb pistons. However there is a oil ring rail that bridges the spot were the pin intesects. Also there is a locator pin in the ring grove that keeps the rail from moving around the piston. I don't know but i think there is more than one way to stroke a 302 to get it to a 347.Meaning different rod lenghts which makes for a different pin highth.

I'm currently building a 347 stroker A friend of mine drives his 347 stroker daily and takes it to the track without any oil burning issues. Older stroker kits had problems, but due to re-engineering the newer kits like the one I got from Coast High Performance in California have no issues and should last 100,000 miles or so.

We're only 30 miles from one another. I'm in Corona. Do you have a '64 427 galaxie like your moniker implies? I'd love to see it.

Anyhow, about your question...When I started working on my engine a few years ago, I did not like the oil ring intersection issue. At the time, there were only 5.4 rod kits available for 331s and 347s. I started doing a little investigating and came up with the combo i'm running today...a 331 using 289 length H beam rods and KB322 pistons. Three good things here; 1) rod/stroke ratio is the same as a 5.4 rod 347, 2) piston skirt is a little longer for better ring stability, and 3) no oil ring intersection. I made a post on the Stroker forum about lessons learned from this buildup if your interested.

The engine has worked out well...very little oil consumption and power is very respectible in my opinion considering i'm using ported 351w heads. Using the 20% rule for drivetrain loss, it's just about 390 FWHP @ 6300 and 390 ft/lbs of torque. I just put a custom 770 street avenger on it and it picked up another 10 RWHP from 3000 rpm plus, but it's got a problem with the vacuum secondary system so the results are not final.

Do you plan on going to the Fabulous Fords Forever show? I registered last week.

Well here it is, just picked her up Thursday and got it on the stand this Friday afternoon.
5.0 roller block, AFR 185 heads, 10.5 compression, steel crank, Eldebrock Air Gap, 650cfm Holley, Comp. roller lifters and guides, ED Curtis Cam, Ford Racing roller rockers, Canton 9 qrt, road race pan, windage tray, Melling high volume pump.

I lost a lot of sleep over that choice. Bigger is not always better. These small block 289 and 302 have quite a history of durability. The horse power out put between the 331 and the 347 is not that huge, although torque is considerable.
I decided that the 331 was putting out plenty of torque for my application. I currently run 225’s for rubber in the rear and have the flanges rolled. Cutting the 9” down was not an option that I had considered. I do not want to have to tub the wells so I will play with the back spacing and possible spring relocation if I can pack some more rubber in there. Have to let my pockets cool down first.
The other consideration though not a major concern by some was longevity and reliability. Oh, I plan to pound it, but want it to hold up and be road worthy.

This package will be going in Horus the 64 Sprint. http://members.cardomain.com/iethiopian

I am currently building a 331 stroker eagle kit.
It will be a limited Nitrious car.
Cam is Comp cams
112 lobe seperation angle
.555 i
.565e
224 @.050 i
232@ .050e
hyd roller
ProAction heads(thank god comp cams bought them out)
2.02 i
1.60 e
200cc intake runners
58cc

10.5 to 11.1 comp ratio(got to cc and all that jive)

250 shot of sauce.

In a 73 maverick with a 9 inch 3.70 moser 31 splines
coan reverse full manaul with all the goodies C4 3500 stahl
should be 3200 lbs or less
6 pt cage
street car
limited track.
Should be a fun ride right?

I went with 331 because of the nitrous. There is hardly any ringland left on them 347s seen a few crack there with nos and boost applications. If no power adders I would say the newer 347 kits should be fine. I lost sleep over this as well. It is a tough choice.

BTW nice looking motor
