393 Edelbrock build

Hey everyone, I am assisting with a project and I would like to get others opinions on the combo that we selected.

90 351W (out of F-250) block
Edelbrock Perf RPM 1.90 heads (60 cc)
Edelbrock Perf RPM Manifold
Edelbrock 750 CFM carb
Stock Pan Rear Sump
Speed-o-motive 3.850 Crank
Stock Rods
302 Pistons (15-22cc dish for ~10:1) Not yet selected...
Cam not yet selected...

This combo is going to be backed by a 2K stall converter on a built AOD with 3.72:1 rear gears in a ~3000 lb car.

A second question deals with the viability of retaining the stock Motorcraft distributor. Funds are running low after buying all the above mention components and ignition was last on the list. What would be the most economical ignition setup, the most reliable? Thanks in Advance, Aaron

Probe 10684-30 piston with 15cc dish & FelPro head gasket will give you 10.25:1 C/R. That's on the high side for pump gas so make sure that you clean up any sharp edges in the combustion cambers.

Since it's a 1990, I'm assuming that it's a factory roller block in which a CompCams 35-324-8 would be a good fit for your gears & converter. You can't go any shorter with that compression ratio.

Stock distributor should be fine. You'll probably want to do some spark advance tweaking.

Hey thanks for the reply. How can I get the stock distrib to work? The ECU will be deleted, the EFI gone, will I be using an MSD unit? The vac advance is currently locked out on this distrib, does that matter? BTW, do you need any parts off a 90 E-250? Complete van (minus engine). Aaron

PS Crank may be a Scat 9000 series, cam selection will likely be farmed out to cam grinder.

You can hit a boneyard and get the Duraspark setup off of an early 80's pre EFI engine. Make sure that you have the correct gear on the distributor for whatever cam you end up with.
Then get a curve kit and dial in the advance. I'd keep the vacuum advance intact for street use. It's good for at least a 10% increase in fuel economy at part throttle cruise and it doesn't hurt WOT performance.
