anyone running a gear drive? mine wont clear front cover

Hello everyone, im a new member, my first time posting, anyway, has anyone installed a gear drive, this thing came with a complete engine I bought, I had the old owner tear down before I bought it, so I could see if it realy had the stuff he said it did, that engine was put back together with a chain, and is now down the road, so im building a 420 stroker windsor, over the weekend i was getting ready to put the front cover on (which is the cover that was originaly used with the gear drive) it hits the center idlers, same thing if I swap the idler around, there is a small idler wheel and a big idler wheel, dose it make a differance which way they go? everything else lines up flush against the block, the shaft on the bigger idler gear is longer so it should ride against the front cover to hold it againet the block right? any info would help me out, thanks... 420ci

I thought about grinding on it, but I would need a 1/4 inch or more, I would have a hole ground through the cover, the cover has been ground on already from the last engine it was on, that was a 302. And as far as I know, there are no differences, what gives?

I ground mine down to about an 1/8" all the way across. You might have to use the same gear drive that was in it. The dog bone just stays in place by opposite motion on each gear. You would think there would be some kind of retainer. hmmm.

When I had my 351W built, my engine builder charged me for "block modifications" to fit the gear drive in there. Not sure what he did, but it couldn't have been much for $50.00. Good luck on yours!

That sounds like either a DynaGear drive. Does your long pin stick out more on one side of the gear than the other? I think the long side that you are talking about goes against the block if I'm not mistaken.

Going off of memory so I am probably wrong yet again. Been a while since I gave up the gear drives and went back to chains.
