Crank hitting oil pump!!!!

Okay here is what I got. 72 windsor block casting # D2AE-6015. I order a 408 stroker kit from hawksracing.4340 crank 3.000" main journals 2.100 rod journals. After I finally got my stud girdle cut down to where everything would clearance out. I put my crank in and put the main caps on it. I had to notch the block in 1 place so the crank would turn freely. Here is where it gets ugly I put the oil pump in and rotated the crank. The front lobe on the crank is hitting the oil pump. Anybody I contact to see if the make a special oil pump only list 2 pumps Hi vol. and standard which are the same size .This kit is a wet sump kit called hawks today. Anybody ever run into this???

Yes, it is quite common. You will need to remove the pump and clearence it. Mark the spot where the crank is contacting it and grind it away. Go easy on the grinding, grind a little then test fit the part, grind again etc. You should have a minimum of about .050" inch clearence at the closest point.
Also, where the pump bolts onto the block, there is a cast in "loop" next to the pump mounting area, its a hole that serves no purpose inside the motor. It will need to be ground away as well. Hopefully, your motor is not all assembled because these things need to be done before final assembly. You dont want metal shavings from grinding in your assembly lube!

I agree completely, on my 393 I had to clearance the pump and little else, when I built the 347 for the oldest boy, I had to grind the hell out of the block. I used one set of bearings on the rod just for this purpose and then disassembled everything and took it in the machine shop and had the machinist roto wash the block.

I then blew everything out after brush cleaning and then installed all the plugs. So everything was nice a clean.

The last thing want to do is short cut this process and pay the ultimate price, early engine failure. That would suck.

I had same problem with mine. I ground the pump AND the counterweight...I was afraid that the reinforcement rib on the pump would be ground away too far to provide the proper reinforcement. Mine was a SCAT 9000 crank, not a hawks.

I wouldn't give hawks the time of day after my experience with them! We won't go there....long story
