A 393 question that was already answered somewhere at another time...

Like everyone else, I am planning on assembling a 393W for 1/4 mile drags. All of the parts have been purchased with the exception of the pistons and crankshaft. The crankshaft is pretty important and I would like to purchase it only ONE time. The power level I am looking for is in the area of, naturally aspirated, 550 to 580HP and 6700/7000RPM max. It will have a solid roller cam, Eagle H-beam rods, and iron Windsor Sr heads that are modified. What manufacturer should I look at? I have seen SCAT and Ohio Crank. Who else am I missing? Also, I'd like to get about 11.5 to 12.3 compression. Piston recommendations??? This subject has all been beat to death but passing on info to other folks is what racing is about. Thanks for the input...

If your looking for just a good crank, a cast iron scat will do the job for you. No need to get crazy here unless your really planing to spin much higher then 7000. Most heads will not go that high without speeding some serious cash. Remember the the higher the rpm the lighter the mass, meaning light weight everything, crankshaft, rod, pistons, roller cam,dry sump,etc.etc. so the old question of how fast do you want to go, speed costs money?

You might consider a long rod 393, using 6.2" rods and special SRP slugs. The longer time you speed at the top the power power you make..

Has any one used the "Hawks" crankshaft or had any experiences with the Speedomotive cranks for the 393W?

I'd recommend the SCAT Series 9000 cast crank.

Hawks is CAT. Run away.....fast. Never used or heard of anyone using a speed-o-motive crank though. I've used many scats, all great cranks. They're well worth the extra $$$ spent, trust me!

You don't have to run away from Hawks cranks FAST! just a speedy trot will do!! I got suckered on one of those POS once.

I've have used several Scat 9000 and Eagle 4340 cranks and have no complaints.

Stay away from the arp 8740 rod bolts that come standard in the eagle H beams. They are only rated for engines turning below 7200 rpm. We lost an engine running eagle 4340 H beam rods w/8740 bolts dure to a rods bolt failure. Called ARP and they told us the we spun it to hard (7600). If you can upgrade to APR 2000 bolts, we buzz our cleveland at 8500 and it's smooth as silk.

Thanks for your input on the rod bolts and crankshafts. I went to SCAT's web site and they offer what's called a "Series 9000 Cast Pro Comp Stroker". Is this the right one?
