393 rods/stroke

The more i look at stroker kits the more confused i get. 3.85 stroke+ 5.95 rods & 302 pistons(15cc and 61cc heads get 10-1) I have seen kits advertise 3.85 stroke and 6.2 rods. and kits with 4.00 stroke and 6.20 rods. I want 10-1 compression with 61cc heads that have 2.02 intake valves and affordable(AFR 185 or TFS track heat). Am i right to assume any kit with 6.2 rods is using other that 302 pistons? enlighten me!!

Here's how to look at it:

take half the stroke also known as the crank throw
add the rod length
add the piston compression height (center of pin to top of piston

This is your total compression or stack height

Now take the deck height of the 351 block and subtract the stack height. Zero deck is when these two numbers are equal and the result is zero. If the result is positive, the piston is down in the bore by that amount at TDC. If the result is negative, the piston is coming out of the bore by that amount.

Its good to be a few thousands down in the bore (.005 to .010) and then have the block decked and squared to end up with zero deck on all cylinders after machining.

Compression will not be affected by rod length.

What he said. Short answer - if it's a 3.85 stroke and not a 5.95 rod, it requires a piston other than a stock 302. Usually custom. The longer the rod, the higher the piston pin has to be in the piston and the higher up/thinner the ring package has to get. Then you get into oil sealing issues, pin in the oil rign land, etc. A longer stroke = more conpression, assuming that deck clearance is held the same.
