393 stroker on a budget

Im heading home soon, and want to start gathering parts for my 393 W build. Are there any particular Windsor rods i should look for? whats the best deal i can find on a crank? am i ok with cast crank and rods? what iron heads should i look for, im looking for best factory castings i can find. are there any certain 302 pistons that work better? certain ones to avoid?
thanks in advance

Just a few things to consider, don't use the early rods pre 1970 save for the guys looking for exact parts for there special projects. Do use late model rods from trucks, rods are suppose to be the best, a little heavier castings. Replace stock bolts with ARP bolts, you may have to resize the big end, any machine shop should be able to do this at $125.00 or less.

A good source for crank shafts would be Powerhouse they http://www.enginekits.com have forged 393 or 408 cranks for under $500.00. As for pistons find a good set of speedpro pistons for 302. they have the best price for kits i have sen this week. And don't forget PAW they have fairly good kit prices.

Now it gets tricky I have used the older 1969-72 4 bbl windsor heads these can be port by a company in calfornia, and make reasonable power considering the restriction and thin castings around the intake valves. If you like challenges you could go with 302 boss pistons and 351 2 or 4v heads and make a boss 393. I have never done it but the componets are available and reasonable. The cleveland head flow better then windsor heads and manifolds are pre-easy but expensive to buy.

Any way you cook this goose you will have over a $1000.00 in goodies, but you should make pretty good power my guess would be over 350-400 horses not much more without help, from a bottle or a huffer. This would be balanced and properly set=up..
