289>347 questions

Hello! First time here. I have a -68 Falcon with originally fitted 289, C4 and 8". Now I'm thinking of building a 347 stroker and like to use parts I already have fitted:

-289 .030 block
-hv oil pump
-roller chain timing
-Edelbrock RPM cam
-Edelbrock RPM intake
-AFB 600 cfm
-1 5/8 headers and 2,5" double pipes
-MSD pro street billet + 6AL+Blaster 2 ignition
-AFR 185 heads, 58cc (coming soon)

I'm thinking of 347 kit: Scat 9000 crank, forged I-beam rods and KB hyper f/t pistons.

-how do you feel of my combo?
-what kind of rockers do you prefer? Cheap alu or more expensive like Comp Cams Pro Magnum?
-do I need main gap girdle?
-is it better to use 5.400 or shorter rod?
-do I need modified/larger oil pan?
-I think block needs some grinding, is it possible to do in my own garage with common air tools?

My target is about 400 hp N/A.

Thank you!

i have alot of the same questions, this is how i came across this site.

i am putting together a mototr for my boy, and have been following this link: http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/1...se/index.shtml

this artical does not mention a main cap gridel, but i am using one along with an oil pan that has the built in windage tray. (canton)

good luck with your project!

I'd think the 600 CFM would be a little small for a 347, maybe try a 650 or 700 depeding on the cam choice and how you run it.

My opinion:

-The 600 Carb is to small
-The 58er 185AFR have a too small combustion chamber, with
the Flat Top you get a too high compression, around 10,8 to
11:1, I would take the 60er Combustion chamber. This is
with zero-deck, but the zero deck is a must!!!
-with this pistons, you can only use 5.4 Rods, for the shorter
5.315 rods, you need other pistons like from Probe.

I dont know if it helps, but this is my opinion.

regards
Hans

I agree with the shorter rods - I'd run nothing but forged in a 400 HP motor anyway. And yes - your cam is close, but the carb is off by a ways.
And, I think there is a potential issue with the long stroke and a 289 block having shorter cylider bores than a 302.

Lots of people have good luck with the KB hypers. I asked the local head guy about them for a potential 331 - he just said "don't go there".
