347 ADVICE

Hi guys, I am a new subscriber from Cape Town , South Africa. I am the proud owner of a 1970 ford capri. My current set-up is 302 with 40 thou pop-up pistons, mild cam, home ported cylinder head job with big valves(chevvy), edelbrock torker 2, holley 720 fitted to c4 with shift improver kit and shifter to a 9" 3.5 final drive. My best et is 12.7 in the street car division. I now plan to use the car solely for drag meetings and plan to go the 347 stroker route with a small shot of juice. I have already acquired my Sniper nos kit(100-150hp), full arp engine fasteners, msd 6al ignition, msd billet distributor, blaster 2 coil, msd 8.5 plug wires and edelbrock victor jr intake(2921). The next shopping list is for the edelbrock 750 double pumper, stroker kit and some aftermarket heads. My questions to you, the pro,s are.....1. I plan to buy and ship the stroker kit, heads and carb from the States myself and not through a locally based(south african) performance dealer, is this risky??(wrong orders supplied) and to avoid any shortcomings who do you recommend I purchase from in the States and which specific 347 combo,s and heads should I opt for. 2...Will my c4 tranny cope with the above set-up, I have no problems with it at this stage, if not what should I be better off with?? 3..What kind of figures(guestimates) can I expect from the above set-up, HP, TORQUE & ET TIMES. 4....My current et,s were with circuit sleeks, what sleek size should I be using now? 5..Do I need to change my flywheel, flexplate and damper??, If so what should I go for??
SORRY FOR THE LONG THREAD GUYS AND ANY GUIDANCE I WOULD ETERNALLY BE GRATEFULL FOR, I AM ESPECIALLY TRYING TO AVOID DEALERS SUPPLYING THE WRONG ORDERS TO MY SHIPPING DESTINATION.
THANX- A - MILL!!!! ..ROBBIE.

Try the enginekits.com for your parts they have a good reputation. I have never bought anything personally but many of my friends have and even when problem have arisen they took care of the problems.

In one case the piston skirt was undersized out of the box, they replaced the whole set and the guys checked it out and everything was all good.

You cam seems ok, to me, you have spent some cash already but if your ready to spend more the Dart heads are nice, the ARF are even nicer if you want to make huge power go with Twisted wedge "R" or Victor "JR". The gliden head is always a great choice for those not on a budget. I started running steel roller rockers a year ago, quieter and longer lasting. Most the Longevity was my main concern.

The 347 kits are really easy to install, if your planning the juice, you will want to buy forged, cast will hold up but everyone likes forged. SRP are nice, but expect $400.00 and up for the set and also expect to wait, a couple of weeks mine took 6 weeks and set was mis matched. Bought directly from SRP, returned and replaced.

You will want to replace the stock rods, my recommendation would be the 5.315 rod. This allows a longer compression height on the piston. But the 5.40 rods work just fine. I have one of each, the oil consumption isn't and issue. So don't get bogged down by that, run good hard rod and main bearings. Ohio with clevite of Fed mogouls are good choices. They come in +/- sizes so you can set your rods and mains ups right.

If you need a absolutely fantastic am use Cam reserch, they will custom grind one jsut for your setup and needs and they a reasonable. They only grind Ford Cams.

I failed to answer your tranny question, you will find out shortly, if not check the C-4 post, Gregaust and some of the others can line you up.

I changed my setup three years ago, to full manual valve body and better clutches, tighter clearances and it hasn't been a part for major work since. I did replace the throttle relief spring when I change filters last year but that was it.

If you a street car I wouldn't go with anything to extreme, I run a 3800 stall, in my car. I have a friend who runs a 4000 in his and he complains about his tranny getting hot
sometimes.

If you go with a transbrake the best one is made by PA, but their quality sucks most of the time. I don't know why, but everything has to be rebuilt a couple of times before they get it right.

Bottom line you can rebuild your tranny for under $150.00 usa, replacing everything, with new, stuff. That means new cluthes, seal kit new bushings, front kevlar, new remanufactured front pump. BUy a good manual, Haynes make a good one. I buy my convertors from a local builder, who charges me a $150.00 for any stall I want. Thats using a used case but what the hell..

If you take NOS, I would go with a 331 Kit.
This kits have not so much sideload on the cylinderwall.
I have a kit from DSS-Racing. No problems, good quality.
They also have good prices for AFR or Trick Flow heads.
As you will also buy from oversea (I am from germany) I would buy from a company who not only have the strokerkit, but also good prices for the head, so that you can make one big order.
There is no problem in overseaorders and no need to buy from a lokal shop. DSS was very helpful with the order.
It took 10 days to get the parts.

regards
Hans

347 ADVICE

Thanx guys, I really appreciate the advice......Hans I would really like to go for the 347 kit, that is one of the reasons why I went for the small shot of juice. The car is gonna be purely for the dragstrip but in the same tone I don,t wanna be stripping motors after evry meeting, so what would be the safest compression ratio to run the 347 with the 150 shot...COMFORTABLY. The kit will definitely be an all forged package and www.adperformance.com seem to have a good deal on Eagle and Scat kits.....what do you guys think?? I,m about to check out DSS now.

THANX AGAIN!!!
