Street Cam for 331

Hey All,

I'm shopping for a good street cam for a 331. So far my engine combo looks like this:

Stock 91 5.0 block
Eagle 3.25 cast crank
Eagle 5.4" rods
KB model 355 pistons
TCI 28oz flexplate
Ford Racing damper
All fasteners are ARP
Milodon windage tray
Edelbrock Performer RPM heads
Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap intake
Barry Grant Road Demon 625CFM carb
Shorty headers

I'm looking for a mild cam. I will not be racing. A mostly smooth idle would be nice. I'm considering either the Comp Cams XE258HR or XE266HR. This will be a 100% street car.

This is going into a 62 Falcon with a C4 tranny. The rear end is an 8" with a 3:1 open carrier. I will be changing to a 3.25:1 locking diff in the future.

Thanks,

Do you know your final compression ratio?

The static compression is 9.7:1.

I would run the bigger cam because that's quite a bit of compression for pump gas. I try to stay around 9.25 with small cams so the 266 would fair better.

Re: Street Cam for 331

Both these cams are pretty high lift and probably have more radical idles and will require a stall convertor. Even the ford racing cam e303 grind require a stall. I would suggest either 3.55's or even 3.73's and a aod tranny as the gears and overdrive will provide a better drive. street car or not with a c4 and 3.25's she'll be a pooch of the line.

Good luck,
Randy T.

I'd consider the XE264HR or XE270HR. The wider 114* LSA will provide a better idle, and both should make great torque.

Considering the compression and displacement, I'd favor the XE270HR. Strokers like a little more cam...

I run an XE262 with a stock convertor (tho its getting swopped out this winter) & I don't have any idle problems, its idles at 750rpm in drive fine, though I would admit its a little 'lazy' of the line, thats the reason for the Convertor & rear gear swop
