4.2 stroker

I have read about all the various stroker combos. I know that the 393 is the easiest and cheapest to do. I need max stroke for my 351W in my truck to pull a 3500 pounds trailer around town. I am going to do the 400M crank deal. I can get a lot of machine work done for free, along with the balancing of the entire assy. I realize that at 4.2, I will have some clearance problems to deal with. I plan on using a chevy 6.0 rod and 351 piston of the proper compression ht. I figure about a .022 cut, to gain zero deck. With a .030 overbore, I should have 425 cubes, or about 70 cubes in stroke over the stock 351.
I realize that I can buy a 4.17 Scat crank, but at over $600, I think I can do the 400M crank cheaper. Since I will not turn this motor beyond 4000 rpm, I see no reason for a forged crank. I gues I am asking if anyone has done such a project. If so, let me know what you came up against. If not then stay tuned. I will post my results, good or bad, pass or fail, on here for all to praise or laugh at me. Hope to hear from someone soon..............Rod

4.2 stroker

You could buy a Scat cast steel crank with a 4 inch stroke for pretty cheap. Under $300. Or a whole kit with forged pistons for around $1000. That'll handle alot of HP. But, well built 351w will handle it. A 408w (4" stroke) will help alot. At some point reliability becomes an issue. Don't forget to figure your compression ratio. You will need either big chambers, or a big dish to build a towing motor. A zero decked 408w with a 63cc chamber is 12.7:1, and a 425 will be 13.3:1. Play around with the compression calculator on the tech page.

I used to tow my camper with a 240 I-6. It weighed about 4000lbs. It was a dog, but it got the job done. People have been towing a lot more than 3500lbs with bone stock 351w's for years.
