help me build a motor...

im debating on whether or not to build a stroker motor to get me into good shape for a car that can do well in bracket racing and also be used on the street. right now i have a 72' 351w block with D0OE heads. the heads are stock and the block is machined .030" over. i used "Dyno2000" to determine that my current setup would be about 400 hp/400 tq. at the flywheel with 10.5:1 cr. could you guys help me pick out a stroker set up to get me to a little bit more than those numbers at the rear wheels, some where around 425 hp? the car is a 67' mustang weighing about 2700 lbs. i also have most of the other information on the parts that i currently have for the non-stroker motor if that is needed.
thanks,
carl

Knowing more about your current setup would help a lot of the guys here suggest what you can do without breaking the bank. If you have good parts that you can build a combo around already it is a lot cheaper than starting from scratch.

And before someone else get around to it I may as well ask
1: What is your budget for this build?
2: How fast do you want it to go?
3: Street, Strip, or Street/Strip car?

ok my current parts include:
stock crank
eagle i beam forged rods (5.956" good to 750 hp)
cam: duration @.05 218/230, lift 458/483, sep. 110.
edelbrock air gap intake, holley street avenger 770

i have yet to decide on pistons, but i plan on some type of forged with a compression of 10.5:1 so that the car will be streetable.
for heads i was going to get a 3 angle valve job done with 2.02/1.64's added. along with a gasket matching port job on the heads/intake manifold.
basically i want a street/strip car.
i want it to run somewhere in the 10's but be able to be driven on the street without any problems.
thanks,
carl

400hp and 400 tq seems a bit high with a cam that small.
im building a 351w this winter also.
but i think i might skip the stroker.
i would be happy with 400 or more hp/tq.
im wondering what cam to get think i want to go roller but it isnt cheap with earlier block.
i allready have a set of afr185s .
ill be interested in what everyone has to say.

You are not going to get into the tens with stock DOOE heads no matter what valves they have in them. Sorry to be brash, but it aint gonna happen. Here is what I would build for street/strip duty and reliability:

*393 or 408 stroker
*10.5:1 to 11.1 compression
*Victor jr or AFR 205 heads
*Hydraulic roller: something like .570-.580 lift 244-250@.050 int/255-260@.050 exh 110 lobe sep.
*Could also use similar Solid Flat tappet camshaft
*Victor jr intake
*780-850 carb.

Should be able to run premium fuel and have a decent idle(1000-1100 rpm) and turn no harder than 6800 rpm. Drawback is combo will require 4.11/4.30 gear and 3500-4000 stall converter. May have some trouble making good vacuum. Gonna be hell on the freeway. Should have a torque curve flat as a tabletop and move that car with ease.I honestly feel a better goal may be to shoot for mid 12's and you could use the heads you have(port work), a milder cam, gear, and converter. A good built 351W with either heavily ported DOOE heads or box stock AFR heads will easily run 12's all day long and drive home on the same tank of gas. Tim.

help me build a motor...

tim,
thanks for the help. i guess i was getting a little carried away with all of the race calculators and dyno programs i had found. the second setup sounds better for where im at with my car. i wouldn't say that i have an exact budget that i need to stick to. i plan on having the car done by spring 2007 (for its 40th ) and am buying the parts to get the motor ready for assembly and installation by this summer. i dont want to break the bank on the motor build, but i want to have a quality build at the same time.
i would prefer a standard transmission. i was planning on a tremec 5 speed with this gearing: 2.87, 1.89, 1.28, 1.00, .64 . currently my 9" rear has 3.50 gears, should i change the rear gearing. would 1.7 roller rockers be enough with the cam i have? or could you suggest a better option?
i really want to have a car that will perform well on both street and strip, but dont know any of the theory on how to do it.
thanks again for your time and help,
carl

I like my 393, So get a crank , keep your rods, get a good set of 302 forged pistons. Get a cam that better meets your goal. Get 1.6 ratio roller rockers. Then get a set of heads. I ran the DOOE's for a summer as i saved for some Victor jr.'s Made a big difference. Oh and i run pump gas. Compression is about 10.7:1 And Rear gear makes all the difference. I would go 4:11 if you have overdive.
