Mild Cleveland stroker with stock heads
Hey, i have a cleveland im eventually going to build. It needs to be bored, heads redone, and crank turned. It is a 2V, open chambered obviously. Considering the cost of getting the crank turned and rebalanced, the stroker option is looking pretty tempting.
73 mustang, Street car, T-5 trans(weak point, I know) right now has 3.00 gears, but probably 3.73 in the future, dont mind a lopey idle.
Who offers good stroker kits for cleveland, i want good power and good torque. 400fwhp would be awesome, anything more just a bonus, 350 would even be acceptable.
Would i get away with the 2V open chambered heads get me to my goal with only mild porting(or preferable none) Or should i pick pp a set of 4V open?? I would like to stay away from aftermarket because i cant really afford it.
This needs to be a budget build, so I guess what im asking is, not counting the work on the block, what would it cost me to reach my goal of 400hp? More than 400hp?? 350hp??

stock stroke cleveland, aussie 2v closed heads with a bit of work, the RIGHT cam and voila 400 at the crank. Been done long time ago.

Re: Mild Cleveland stroker with stock heads
The 2V heads should reach that goal with some minor porting. Check-out this website and talk with Scott. Re-In-"Car"-nation High Performance and Automotive Repair/index
The Closed chamber Aussie 2V heads are more efficient than the open chamber american heads and would be a worth while investment. Plus you get some more compression and it will be a little less fuel sensitive.
A T-5 should be fine at your level on street tires. Just be nice to it.

Re: Mild Cleveland stroker with stock heads
Pick up those closed chamber heads, ( if valves are 2.19's..not familure with Aussie's...??) get a cam with 225 durration and .510 lift, along with mild porting / port matching work, little valve de-shrouding will easily get you 420 - 440 HP.
Then you will absolutly have a T-5 issue.

Re: Mild Cleveland stroker with stock heads
So even after haveing to get my crank ground and rebalanced, aussie heads, i would still be ahead of a stroker? What about future growth?? If i would go with a stroker kit now with my open heads, longer stroke would bring compression up for me right?? Then a few years down the road add better heads for more power? Could i make 400 hp with my stock 2v, stroker, and a strong cam?

Re: Mild Cleveland stroker with stock heads
400 hp is not hard and you will not require a stroker motor to do it, but if you do a stroker it will make more torque than a 3.5 stroke motor.
The problem with the open chamber heads is getting the compression to high as they are detonation prone with much over 9.5-10:1.
Good Combo for 400hp
750 Holley Double Pumper
RPM Style Dual Plane
10:1 Compression (you will need to run 92 or better fuel)
Hydraulic cam - with something in the 230 degree range @ .050, low .500's lift and 110 LC and add about 6-8 degrees to the exhaust duration (Split duration) + matching Springs and retainers. If you stay at the lower side if .500 lift the stock rockers could be reused, but going to an adjustable valve train with some roller rockers is much better.
1 3/4" Headers and good Dual Exhaust
Good hot Electronic Ignition and proper tune.
Gasket match the heads and intake, blend the bowls and have a High performance valve job with a light back cut on the valves or replace with decent aftermarket HP SS valves if they need to be replaced.
This should get you pretty close
Also keep in mind the rest of the car may need some upgrades to make everything work properly. Convertor (Something in the 2500-3000 stall) / Transmission upgrades, A Little gear (3.50's to 4.11's) Depends on how heavy your car is, Proper fuel system, Ect.
Everything needs to be properly matched to get the most out of it.

They are a Closed Chamber version of the 2V heads that where avaliable in Austrialia. Same Valve Sizes as the American Open Chamber Versions 2.06 1.65 i believe.

That combo... is that with the Aussie heads or open chambered? I dont have to worry about converter(T-5) I need more gear, but that will come later, fuel system i would try to figure out after the engine is done.
That sounds pretty good with the OC heads. How much would i gain with the Aussie's?? I was planning on running 92 octane.
I was planning on getting good aftermarket valves, everybody i have heard from said the Clevelands like to puke stock valves.
Thanks

Re: Mild Cleveland stroker with stock heads
The Aust. heads are both closed chamber and open chamber. The Falcon GTand GTHO ran American 4V closed chamber heads the same as the 70 Mach 1 and The 71--72 Boss 351.But we didn't get the 4 bolt mains and only cast pistons that cracked at anything over 6300 RPM hence the 6200 rpm limiter.
