Re: 418W build up - RPM or Vic Jr.
I have a 418 solid roller engine with ported canfield cam is .688/.672 248/262 and the power peaks at 5800, I would go to the next larger cam that motor will still run fine. With the money involved I would be pretty darn sure what stall I'd run its a pita to change later imo. I wouldn't pay very much attention to the comp cams tech.

Re: 418W build up - RPM or Vic Jr.
If you are asking will the bigger headers raise the HP peaking RPM, the answer is no. OR very little. maybe by 100 RPM. One thing I must point out here, most of these small changes you are talking about will be un detected once you have your car together and running. Small headers usually feel better in the car than the bigger ones do. Same with the cam.If you must spend lots of money to make these changes, think that over.

Re: 418W build up - RPM or Vic Jr.
Okay, how does this sound....
*424 stroker- 4.10 crank- 6.2" H beams- Keith Black Forged #724 pistons .060 over (10.1:1 compression)- Total Seal Gapless Rings
*Pro Comp heads with 190cc intake runners- 2.02/1.60 valves-ported and polished
*Professional Produts Hurricane (Victor Jr.) intake- port matched to heads
*Barry Grant Holley 850cfm
*Comp Cams 35-427-8 hyd. roller- 242/248@ .050- 576/600 lift- 110 lobe sep.
*Doug's Headers- 1 3/4" stepped to 2 1/8" primaries- 3" collectors
*2.5" exhaust- x pipe and Magnaflows
*C-4- ACC Performance 2800-3200 stall converter
*3.55 Posi Rear w/ 26" OD rear tires
I might as well get it right the first time! Does that look like a good, streetable 500HP combination?

Re: 418W build up - RPM or Vic Jr.
Just make sure whoever does the head work does a good job and has a good reputation.
I just flowed a head for a customer, different brand but he insisted the person who ported his heads has been doing it for 20+ years and is one of the best! He claimed 300/240 cfm out of it, and when I flowed it, using the exact same bore size, depression, and even a pipe on the exhaust, it went 281/195 intake/exhaust. Now he know's why his car only ran 10.40's and not 10.00's!
I let him watch so there was no chance of me fudging...so be careful.
And it sounds like a good build. It's very common that even after you do a combination "right" you will still make changes over time to it. That's kinda the fun too.

Well Woody1, what can I say to that?... Is there anything on my parts list you DO like? Anytime you would like to buy me a real Victor Jr. intake and a set of AFR heads I'll be happy to accept!!! Like a lot of people on here, I'm just trying to do the best I can with the money and existing parts I have access to. I'm very happy for you if you have the resources to buy every name brand part you want. If you would like to tell me about your experience with gapless rings and Pro Comp heads and what problems you had with them, then I'd love to hear it. Otherwise: Your comment = useless. Besides, since when is a Barry Grant prepped Holley not a real Holley????

Well when you subject yourself to people wanting comments, thats typically what you get. As for gapless rings, they work real well doing one thing only, that is sucking money out of your wallet, seeing as how you say you cant afford all the brand name stuff, but yet you choose a very expensive ring that has shown time and time again that it does not increase hp/tq etc.. The whole theory they have based those rings on, there are 0 gains on a gapless, from my little bit of engine building in the last 15 years.
As for the pro comps, just search around a bit on those, my expeiences where they were very poorly machined, bad rocker arm geometry and some other small issues, again just my findings. Barry Grant you can keep bud, UNLESS things have gotten alot better, for example the demon line of carbs I have touched when new had more shrapnel in them than a scrap yard, AGAIN my findings, everyone is different. You wanted comments, I gave them, I am done now, I wish you luck bud.

When I asked for comments, I was looking for constructive feedback I can actually use not for someone to just bash my parts list with no explanation. Take a look at the other replies on this thread... Do you see the difference???
Wow, it must be quitting time because you keep saying, "Bud"!!!!!

Being self employed means there is no quitting time, unfortunately. Again, good luck........
