Re: 418W build up - RPM or Vic Jr.

I called Comp Cams once more to get more info on the difference in the XE 35-427-8 and the 35-426-8 for my application. They are very adamant that the 35-426-8 will make plenty of peak HP at 5800-5900rpm in my engine and that I am much better off with this cam on the street in terms of throttle response and driveability.
I am not completely convinced, but I already have the cam and my existing valve springs, 2800 stall, and 3.55 posi rear gears are a better match for this cam.
Since the assembly of my engine begins today, I am going to use the 35-426-8 that Comp Cams strongly recommends and see what it does on the dyno. I will post the results here so you can see how it turns out.
After all, if I'm not happy with the dyno results, then I can always switch to the bigger cam, make the necessary changes, and sell this cam to a friend who is building a 393.
What do you think?... Make your predictions now and we'll see (probably next week) who gets the closest to the dyno results!!!
- My prediction is 535 HP @5900rpm and 505 lbs.-ft @4400rpm (At least I would be happy with that!)
-424 Stroker 4.10 crank/ 6.2" H-beam rods
-.060 over Forged Keith Black #724
-Total Seal Max-Seal rings
-Pro Comp aluminum heads 210cc intake runners 2.05 / 1.60 valves (lightly ported)
- Professional Products Hurricane (Victor Jr. type) intake port matched to heads
-Comp Cams Xtreme Energy hyd. roller 35-426-8 (236/242@ .050 555/576 lift 110 lobe sep.)
-Barry Grant 850cfm Holley (not Demon)
-Hooker Super Comp Headers 1 3/4" primaries
-MSD 6AL Ignition

Re: 418W build up - RPM or Vic Jr.

Good luck....The cam and heads look small to me compared to most combo's I've seen but you never know...The key may be in the porting and how well the heads work.

Frdnut, since we have similar cars how much duration is your cam and how does it act on the street? Is it responsive at lower rpms? Do you know what kind of power it makes and at what rpm? Ofcourse, you do have a 4speed working for you! Nice ride!!!

Re: 418W build up - RPM or Vic Jr.

Thanks for the compliment..I have a custom cam from Camshaft Innovations so I don't like to give out specs in respect for Jay...I will say that it has a split duration and is in the 260 degree range @ .050..Lift is close to .700...The engine idles at 900 rpms and has good street manners..Its a bit sluggish in "high" gear below 2000rpms which is a very slow speed....Anything else will blow the tires off...Jay said peak hp rpm would be 5800 rpms but I have not really noticed any drop off buzzing it up close to 7000 rpm..And it gets there very quick..I would not be too concerned about low end torque on these stroker motors they make tons of it...I can't tell you too much else..I had lots of issues with oil leaks so I never got any performance numbers this summer..I would be happy to get the kind of numbers you are talking about though.

Re: 418W build up - RPM or Vic Jr.

For comparison's sake, I built a 425W just like yours...same bore, same stroke, same rod length.

I used Edelbrock Vic Jr heads right out of the box.

I also used a Comp hydraulic roller, with 230 duration at .050". The lift was .544". It was installed at 110/106.

On the top end was a Vic Jr. intake and a Demon Mighty Demon 750.

It made peak horsepower at 5400 rpm and peak torque at 4500. Peak numbers were 484/500.

Re: 418W build up - RPM or Vic Jr.

Thanks for posting that info! That gives me a good point of reference. Does a 4.060 bore with a 4.10 stroke come out to 425 cu. in.? I was guessing at 424. Not that one cubic inch makes any difference! What kind of car is your 425 in?

WOW, Thanks for the "heads up".... that is a very interesting article! Makes me wonder why the Comp Cams techs didn't mention that cam to me. It is very similar in size to the 35-426-8 but designed for strokers. What jumps out at me is the big split in the duration and the 114 lobe sep. Looks a lot like a nitrous cam.

Re: 418W build up - RPM or Vic Jr.

Hey guys, there's another good article in this month's Popular Hot Rodding. It's the follow up to the Twister article from last month: 1970 Ford Fairlane 500 - 408 Windsor - Popular Hot Rodding Magazine
In the current issue, they dynoed the 408W with a Comp Cams 35-426-8 and AFR 205 heads. It made right at 550HP at 5900rpm and plenty of low end torque. This cam requires only a 2800 stall with an automatic making it very street friendly.
