What Cam for a Street- 331

Hallo,
I would like to tune my 331 Stroker over the winter.
Therefore I will lightly port the trick flow Twisted Wedge heads, change the body of my holley 650 DP against a proform body from summit and clean up and portmatch my headers and the weiand stealth intake.
One more thing is my camshaft:
I have now installed a Speed Pro camshaft with a similar duration and lift as the Trick Flow Stage 1 (212/221° @0,05", 493/510 lift)
In my basket is also a CompCam FW 270H-R10 (215°@0.05", 533 lift)

I would like to get more peak power without loosing to much low end torque. At cruisingspeed, the engine reves around 1500 rpm and therefore the engine should run good at this rpm.
The engine should also idle at something around 900rpm.

Will the change to the CompCam bring more power or should I take another cam??

Thank you for your help.
Hans

p.s. the car is a 1110 kg Sunbeam Tiger

The cam you have should work fine as it is similar to the trick flow and is designed to take advantage of the twisted wedge heads. The porting may even help this cam perform better. You need to find the compression ratio of the 331, 400hp is a very real figure to reach with this engine. You may end up sacrificing idle quality to make this engine scream in the light weight sunbeam.

Good luck,
Randy T.

Those cams have shorter duration #'s than the TFS stage 1.

The Comp Cam has more ideal lift #'s for TFS heads (in stock form, and the duration should be great for low and mid range torque.

However, an important factor you're leaving out is the LSA. The LSA has a lot to do with how the cam will idle.

The LSA of the CompCam is 110°
Another opinion would be the Trick Flow Stage 2, but I think this would be a little too big and I would loose lowend torque and driveability.

What do you think about it?

Re: What Cam for a Street- 331

110* will give it a noticeable idle, but your duration is low so it should be very tolerable, and it should make lots of torque.

The TFS stage 2 is a step up from what you were originally talking about, but it is tolerable in a 331 IMO. Personally, I'd favor something like this considering the combination of a very light-weight car, 331 c.i.d, and porting the heads.

I had a similar cam in a 347 in my '87 LX with 3.55 gears and it ran great. the bigger cam will go a long way towards livening that thing up with mid-range and top-end power, yet it idled great and had great driveability. The specs were a little more aggressive except for the wider 114* LSA (mostly to keep the computer happy as it was an EFI car).

In my opinion, a good gain in top-end power will be more noticeable (and fun) than sacrificing it for small gains in low-rpm torque in such a light-weight vehicle.

Hans save yourself allot of headaches and wondering if you have te right cam specs. Contact Kevin or Scott at Cam Research/MPG Head Service in Colorado. Are they qualified? They compete in the Jegs Engine masters engine build competition. You will see Scott in the past Engine Masters issues. They only do Fords, as far as I know and are the great guys . Better yet, competitively priced and you will know you got the right cutom ground cam for your engine build. . You will get a 16 question form to fill out that takes everything from tire size to transmission ratio. You have nothing to lose by calling and talking.USA at 303-762-8196 Goodluck Paul IN LA

Re: What Cam for a Street- 331

Hallo Paul,
I have talked to camresearch and they came with a cam, whitch is a little small in my opinion.
Duration should be 215/220° @ 0,05" and lift 0,505 both, LSA 108°.
They told me that more lift would not gain power as the trick flow would not work with the higher lift.
What was not good in my opinion is first, that they have no email-adress, so we have to talk. This is a problem for a normaly not english-speaking person. Writing is easier than talking (but also not easy at all).
Second, they asked me about my rearend-ratio. I have a 2.88:1 rear, but really small tyres (195/60-14).
They are well priced, no problem, but I do not know if this is what I would like to have, as this is mostly similar to what I have already installed.

regards
Hans
