ok so vacumm gauge on the manifold to get a reading of 10 lbs or so, or until it becomes unstable. cool. now i just have to find a vacuum gaude...
the distribuitor seems stock with the pertronix point replacement and the retarded P.O. pinched and sealed the vacuum advance!!!

You may want to pull the dist and take it to some one with a distributor machine and check the curve and make sure everyting is working correctly.

Re: "big" cam on 390 timing???

well i did the vacumm thing, i did the timing light thing, and i did the timing by ear, the best was run it up and turn, where it runs crappy mark it, retard it and wher it runs crappy mark it, place in the middle then drive and adjust drive and adjust. the dieseling problem i had was maybe fuel related im runnin 87 with octane booster, when thats out ill run 87 by itself, if it diesels again ill try mid grade. 390's after all is a high compression engine+cam= frustrated owner.
but its all good now i hope.
Raf
thanks for the help guys

Nope, that's not what I said...

I said to set the timing at around the 10* mark then start it and get it nice and warm.
THEN you put a vacuum gauge on the manifold and adjust your timing until you get the highest STEADY vacuum reading.
Once there just back off the timing a couple degrees and you should be perect.
