New here and my recently rebuilt engine went

I had what I thought was a rep. builder build my engine for my '66 fastback. I added a paxton but did not connect it. Last Friday, I was going to replace the iron heads with AFR185's and found a shocking discovery, one of the comp cam alum. rockers, he installed sheared within in the nut on the exhaust side and the intake side, the push rod curled up like a pretzel and there are 2 small pieces of metal removed from these "harden" rods. Taking further look at the push rods, all 16 have excessive wear for only having 73 miles on them by the guide plates and the guide plates themselves look fine. I think the rods were too long which I need to check.

So I have decided on building a new engine - no trust in the engine builder at all - with either a 331 or a 347 forged kit and still have my paxton with 6-8 psi. With this combo, everything I've read states that I need to upgrade the block, but I've read here that some don't believe that.

Can I get any comments on this? Or the low end of the piston on the 347? Oiling or longevity on the engine?

My kits is from AD Performance, Your Source for Longblock Performance Parts. They are local to me and the ease of parts exchange due to wrong size is some bonus for me.

Thanks,
Danno

With 185 heads and a blower, you could easily get past 500 HP. If that is your goal, then you should look into an aftermarket block.

If you are only looking for 450 HP, sell the paxton, buy the 185's and you will have a great engine with what you have.

Assuming there is no damage in the lifter gallery from the bent push-rods. Sounds like the wrong length p-rods were used. Did you figure out why they bent on you yet?

Welcome Danno!

You're right in the same neck of the woods as one of our Galaxie Wagon Owners

About the build you're wanting I kow nothing. I'm a semi stock kind of guy...

I wanted to welcome you to FM, and let you know that soon you'll get your answer.

I can't remove the paxton, I built it as a shelby supercharged model gt350s. From whom I talked to, they said that when the ped. stud broke, it caused an influx of gases which bent the push rod. Some had thought that they might be a oil issue but that was no evidence of that.

I wouldn't waste the money on the forged crank if you going to use a factory block.

Re: New here and my recently rebuilt engine went

I would like to avoid using a standard block. Toss up between the dart sportsman block and the new boss 302.

Anybody know the hp rating for the boss 302? I know that the ford sportsman block is only good until 450 hp.

Ford Racing supposedly sells a Boss 331 crate engine rated at 500hp.

Re: New here and my recently rebuilt engine went

I'm trying to put together an engine and would rather not go crate. I have most of the stuff from the trashed new engine.
