I asked them to dumb it up for me and mark the heads and gaskets drivers side and passenger side (even though it shouldn't make any difference as long as you have the front of the head gasket towards the front of the block).
A check on the Felpro 1021 shows that it is also a 4.100 gasket, with a steel wire ring. I wonder if it will really help?

It is weird that only one of your heads had the problem.

Let us know, Brandon how it works out for you.

Re: AFR 205 head problems

I'd measure both heads and make sure they are the same, I'd want to make sure the where machined correctly at the factory.

Re: AFR 205 head problems

yes I have run them. I ran them last year, made about 50 passes at the strip...tore it down this winter to have a look--all was well. I didn't think to look at the gaskets though. Ran it 2 weeks ago, a screw came out of the throttle body valve and went down the motor....so I pulled it apart and got the screw out, everything else looked great. Still didn't think to check the gasket, though. I just fired it last night and all seems "normal". Hard to tell anything when it's just idling in the driveway--and I don't get to run it long (no mufflers) because the neighbors don't really appreciate the noise.

Re: AFR 205 head problems

I don't think the new gaskets are going to help either because they said my 1011-2's were fine not damaged at all. I asked them to write drivers side and passenger side on both the heads and head gaskets so I'll see what they look like when they get here next week.

Just to clarify the problems I am having :

1. My fire ring is hanging over into the combustion chamber .037 on one of my heads every cylinder the same amount in the same place (There is no way this is going to seal compression)
2. When I tried to install my shaft rocker arms, the rocker arm stud spacing was off on cylinders 1 & 8 not allowing me to bolt down the pedistals. I called AFR, they said this was not possible and that if I shipped the heads to them and nothing was wrong I would not only have to pay for shipping but also pay a 75.00 charge for them to look at them. After they measured the heads they verified the spacing was wrong, then suggested that I grind the bolts on my new shaft rocker arms to get them to fit cylinders 1 & 8. I told them there was no way I was going to grind my new rockers to cover up their poor machining. I told them to ship me a different set of heads, they said all their 205 heads were off that it would be 3 or 4 months before they got the problem fixed. They did give me a set of titanium retainers to make up for the heads being machined wrong though.

Re: AFR 205 head problems

This is kind of sad. I sell these heads and I use them on engines I build, I NEVER have any issues with ANYTHING.. Every once in a while, some other engine builder will call me and tell me something like the studs being drill ed off, or something like that, but I never see. it AFR is a great place to work with, and I am sure they will resolve your problems. Did you buy your heads directly from them, or through a dealer ??

Re: AFR 205 head problems

Joe I bought the heads from Coast. I'll see what they look like when they get back next week. I hope these new head gaskets fix it.

Re: AFR 205 head problems

Jason at AFR called today. The 1021 Fel pro's will not work, something about water seeping between the head and the block. I asked him what the problem was, that I had been talking to people on ford muscle and they have been sealing 205's with 1011-2's just fine. I told Jason again, dumb it down for an stupid Okie. Mark the heads and head gaskets drivers side and passenger side. When they ship them to me I hope they are right.
