351 Cleveland rebuild
Hi all and thanks for taking a look and hopefully some guidance as well on this topic. I have a 1971 Ranchero with a 351 C 2v. I will have the motor out next weekend, and down to block and vated hopefully the following. What I am looking for is a tried and true recipe. What I mean is, I am looking for what combinations work best for a toque motor. I do have a nice wet delivery nitrous from Nitrous express that I will be putting on as well. Again I am not looking for “use this Intake”, or “try this crank”, but a hole list(maybe even a combo form one of the bigs( JEGS, Summit ect)) as in use this crank, these rods this cam these lifters, have your heads done to these specifications type of list. I understand this is a lot to ask, but I am hoping for a lot. I also need to mention that this needs to be done under 4k including any machine work. I understand that nothing comes in on budget when doing a motor, but I do want to be as close as possible.
This is not a daily driver so I am not worried about MPG. I am worried about long term reliability and speed ((do those every go together??)So nothing to aggressive. In my dream world, this would be about 350-400 hp prior to nitrous. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask and I will get back as fast as I can.
Thanks in advance

When I say the whole package I mean from the bottom of the block, bearings, freeze caps ect. To the rods pistons rings intake carb headers electronic ignition

Re: 351 Cleveland rebuild
I'd start with a 408 stroker kit.

Re: 351 Cleveland rebuild
what are the possibilites of getting the above mention hp with out a stroker? Then i really go up in machine work dollars i think. by the way I live in the phoenix arizona area if we have any locals on here.

Re: 351 Cleveland rebuild
the 350-400 hp isn't a big issue with a stock displacement 351C, its just $ for $ a cast Stroker Crank, Set of Decent Forged Rods and Pistons Isn't to much more the doing a quality rebuild with your stock Crank and Rods.
Up side to a bigger motor,
1) Less RPM to reach the desired HP
2) much more Torque
3) Nice Manners as far a Idle and drivability at the same hp level as the smaller motor.
4) Minimal Cost Difference.
A 71 Ranchero is a big and heavy vehical and you need all the torque you can get to make it run

Re: 351 Cleveland rebuild
Thank you for the advice.
Do I not need to have more machine work down with a stroker motor? and in a non expierenced question, i get real confused with rod ratio with the strokers. When do you get to be more of a hassle. Also remember that i have a nitrous kit going on that can be from 50-750. I do not plan on going over the 100, but we alwasy want something faster. So if i had a reliable 400 motor that was strong and i added a 100 shot, i am not a 500hp motor. I know there are people with 6 and 700 + motors out there, but i think i will be pretty damn happy in the 500-600 range. also when does the block start to have problems with the hp?
Thanks again for your experience and advice
Scott

Re: 351 Cleveland rebuild
Will Only Require Typical Basic Performance Machine work (Same as any Good HP Rebuild)
Bore and Hone the Block
Balance the Rotating Assembly
Deck the Block (You Want "0" Deck if possible)
Line Hone (Optional)
May need to clearance the block slightly (Nothing Major)
You also going to want to conside getting a set of Either Small chamber 4V Heads or some Ausie Closed Chamber 2V's, The Chambers in you current heads are very detonation prone.
Or if your budget allows Edlebrock is making a nice Street Aluminum Head for 351C's
Im all honesty with a set of 4V heads on a 408" Motor you probably going to make a bunch more than your goal.

Re: 351 Cleveland rebuild
Stock 2 bolt block is fine just don't go more than .030 over. Start to worry in the 550-600 range. This Assumes you can tune an engine.
Line hone is Honing of the mains for alignment of the main bearings. Its a good idea on a performance build, help guarentee everything is aligned and smooth.

Re: 351 Cleveland rebuild
Hehe yeash, i wont be doing any of the precision work, i will have a local company do that for me so as far as tuning, thats what i will pay the professionals for, thats when my check book becomes my best tool. Do you recomend any specific 408 kit? Therer seems to be alot out there to chhose from. I also think i will be more than good on a 650, unl;ess you think a 700 is the ticket. I nunerstand it is counter productive, but i would like to stay with the 2v heads. yet the little voice in my head is telling me to go after the rpms, and get off my soap box
