393 stroker for a 4x4

I am building up a 351 windsor to put into a 4x4 for mudding. I am going to bore it 30 over and put a 393 stroker kit into it. I would like to use AFR 185cc heads. With that set up what would be the best cam to use? What would be the best valve lift and duration set up in order to give my engine the best torque at low RPM's to spin 44"+ tires in the mud? I would like to use hydraulic roller tapit lifters.

Cam Research (303) 762-0022

they will ask you everying from the compression to the gears you are using and the rpm range you want then build you a custom cam .

i did one for my 393 and never looked back

Re: 393 stroker for a 4x4

What intake setup?
What gearing?
What trans?

Check out Comp's 4x4 line for hydraulic flat tappet cams.

Custom is a great route to go, but the 4x4 world is a whole different game from drag racing. Make sure to describe intended use of the vehicle.

Either way, go for a broad torque curve.

Re: 393 stroker for a 4x4

we did one very similar, but in a hay truck. It used a cam from Cam Research--makes EXCELLENT torque from idle to about 5000 then signs off. That's with RPM heads.

The owner wanted the torque and power of a 460, but didn't want the weight because it gets used in pastures where it may be dry as a bone in one place but a hidden lake 5 feet away and the weight of the 460 would tend to "sink" the front of the truck (2 wheel drive '79 F350 long flat bed). Last time I talked to him, he said it was better than a diesel. Light yet extremely powerful for what he does..and it's even nicer seeing that it's a 4 speed.

Based on what you want, The Comp Cams XR264RF-HR ( part # 35-413-8 ) will do everything you asked for, and it will be cheaper and faster than getting some custom made thing you dont really need. Same your money for something else.

you can do a custom for around $ 250 or at least thats what i paid 2 years ago so how much do you really save ?

on what is probly the most imortant component in your build nothing can make or break your build like the cam!

and theyr not just for drag cars , the whole point in doing a custom is getting the engine to do what you want as well as acomidating the rest of youre (particullar) components to ba a perfect combonation.
If im just rebuilding my stock dailey driver ill go with an off the shelf cam but as far as my pride and joy ... custom is the only way to go
