Mercury 410

I heard that special pistons have to be made to make Mercury 410(390 with 428 crank)?

Re: Mercury 410

I think if you'd post this over in the Galaxie forum you'll get quite a bit of info. If I remember right my old pickup had 410 pistons in it and it was a 390. The only difference between the 410 and 390 is the crank. Piston/valve clearance would have to be checked.

I don't know much about these engines, but I did find listings for both 390 and 410 pistons, and they are not the same compression height. The 390's are taller and would probably hit the valves, if not the head. So to answer the original question- yes, you have to use 410 pistons, but they are available, so they don't have to be specially made.

I agree except It is really a 410 crank in the 428 since it came first. The 428 has the 406 bore of 4.13. The 390 and 410 share a 4.05 bore and same rods. Piston pin is .10 higher in the 410 piston.

Re: Mercury 410

I have bored at 390 out to std 428 bore size, then when you get a 428 crank, you end up with 428 cubic inches from a 390 block. I know it has been done many times before.

Re: Mercury 410

Yep, done many, many times.

And looks like a 390 cu in from outside. Just has a lot of "punch". FE's look pretty much the same externally.
