347 breather(s) or PCV

Can somebody tell me the best/proper ventilation setup for a carbed 347. Right now i've got a KN type breather in front of both valve covers and no pcv (have a second hole blocked off on rear of drivers side valve cover). Let me know if you need more engine info.

Re: 347 breather(s) or PCV

You need to have a PVC on one valve cover and a breather on the other side. It needs to suck the exhaust gases out of the engine and reburn them. If not.....you are asking for trouble down the road. Maybe even a fire.

Re: 347 breather(s) or PCV

An "Open PCV System" will work fine. PCV valve on one of the valve covers + open breather on the other valve cover...... you could also leave the 2nd. breather installed, but the PCV vacuum draw will help remove the fumes from the crankcase and allow the engine to stay cleaner and the oil to last longer.

What Joel5.0 said.

The PCV system is supposed to pull nasty crankcase gases through the intake via vacuum and "reburn" it...for emmisions pusrposes as well.

Vented, as you have it, works perfectly fine. You just might get some residue seeping through your filters and onto the valve covers, but it shouldn't be so much so that it becomes a fire hazard. An elevated fill tube might help with this, and in more extreme cases of it some people use an oil/air seperator...either vented or tied into the PCV system (I'm not talking abuot the dinky setups for air compressors either).

You many times get the "oil smell" from just open breathers. Do you and your engine a favor and install a PCV to relieve the crankcase pressure and oil smell.

Re: 347 breather(s) or PCV

Does the PCV need to be baffled to keep from pulling oil through intake??

Re: 347 breather(s) or PCV

I would baffle it some how.

Yes, a baffle should be used. If that doesn't work, an oil/air seperator as I mentioned is an option, but requires regular maintenance (draining).
