Just How Much HORSEPOWER Can I Get ?

Hi Guys

A friend of mine gave me a nice/clean 302 short block.

Just 4 the hell of it ~ How Much Horsepower Can I Get Out Of That Engine?

I fairly new at bulid engine(s) just bored-up my 289 to .030ths. balanced what had to be balanced; piston, etc.

The most I can bored out safety is .030ths. RIGHT.
Not want any SLEVES !

Now what do I have to do to get more Horsepower or torque ?

Thanks Guys
P.S. $ $ $ is NO OBJECT.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL

Re: Just How Much HORSEPOWER Can I Get ?

You must be a single guy If $$$ is no object.
Talk to 289Nate on this board, he's got a 431hp 289 that's pretty impressive(still not 100% tuned yet).
You want max HP, but tell us a little about yourself. What type car, weight, gears, A/T or 5 speed, or intended use??? Is it going to be a 90% street car and 10% track?? You can't go wrong with stroking that 302 to a 347. At least a 50-65hp/tq gain just in cubic inches alone.

Money no object?

Jeez buy yourself a couple hairdryers, the best heads you can find and a standalone EFI and you can make 1000+.

Money no object??? then get a World product block, and start over with an 9.5 deck aluminum block (110lbs lighter), stroke it to 460ci, 10deg world aluminum race heads, sheetmetal intake, billet crank, custom pistons, billet 4340 rods from oliver or crower, a custom solid roller cam, lightweight valves,(inconel exhaust, ti intake) and then like mavman said, twin hairdriers, and 1000,1300+HP after its tuned.....with some leftover for later if that became booring... OH and dont forget the professional engine builder required to screw that whole mess together properly.
$18000,$26000 later youll have a very bulletproof, high horsepower MONSTER.
Hell even without the turbos youd have somewhere around 800hp properly tuned, in a "Small block" configuration.

Re: Just How Much HORSEPOWER Can I Get ?

You can get a LOT of HP, but a safe # would be 350 HP and no prob for 400 if you do things right. Many have a shat load more but they use a dart block or other non natural 302 stuff...

Re: Just How Much HORSEPOWER Can I Get ?

Hi Spali32

I have a 289 v8 ~ '66 Ford Mustang Covert. I'm new to engine building and got started late in life but I'm having one hellva time learning and doing the deal.

I'll be using the car as a daily driver. Brought brand new T5 manual tranny for it.

I hope this helps you to help me further along in my quest to build and buy it right.

Thanks Guy
GOD BLESS

Re: Just How Much HORSEPOWER Can I Get ?

1st- What is the purpose of the engine. Street, Daily driver, Strip, full race? Before you can start plugging in parts you need to know what your going to do with it.

Did some machine work for a friend that has a 436 SBC twin turbo at 2500hp running outlaw street, currently for sell. So hp can be made, just what do you plan on doing with it. Pump gas, race gas, Alky???

Re: Just How Much HORSEPOWER Can I Get ?

I believe he has over 52K in the engine.... He is asking 37k for a turn key motor.

Re: Just How Much HORSEPOWER Can I Get ?

Typicaly an Naturaly aspirated Street 289 / 302 with good parts will be in the 300-400 hp range. Pump Gas, Drivable and it won't break the bank. Better heads, higher compression, Roller Cams, more inches and a little less streetable and 400-500 hp is not very hard to get.
