351w+nitrous

Hi, This is my first post here and am wondering what does a 351w with ported heads (stock heads) and say a beefy cam make? I want to stroke it but I also would like to know what it would make on just minor things and a 200 shot. when stroked i want to put 408-427ci in it i just dont know how much of a stroke. I'm aiming for 500-600hp out of it and am going to be running nitrous on it as well. so do i need to stroke it much? car will be a weekend warrior/race car i want to be able to drive it on the street but make big power (with the juice) when needed at the track. i want to run low 11's high 10's in it the engine will be going in a 99-2004 body stang and carbed. already ripping the engine apart and need help deciding the proper stroke and head's for the engine. plus im trying to keep this a healthy budget build first time building a engine and its not a big deal if a only get a few good hard core runs out of it. that will just make me build a even better one (but the longer it last the better lol).

Thanks for the help......

Re: 351w+nitrous

There are some nice 408 strokers kits around.

Not sure how far over 500 hp the stock block will take.

With any heads worth a hoot and some cam. The 408 with a 200 shot will get you 600 hp i would think.
You should be in the low 10's easy.

Re: 351w+nitrous

Stroking should not be necessary. With a solid build and perhaps a good nitrous cam, you should hit 600 easy. Considering a 200 shot, you're only looking for 3-400hp N/A. The block will be fine - they are much stronger than the garden 302 variety - just be sure to prep and blueprint everything and get your bearing spec's right-on so the NO2 doesn't beat them to death. BTW - at that level of juice you'd better be running some ignition management, or even better, a full EMS fuel/spark setup.

Re: 351w+nitrous

so i shouldnt stroke it just add cam and spray! so how would this work with a carb? and this will be going in a 1990 5.0 now now not the orginal 99+ body. the 351 is all a part right now so if i dont stroke it (for now) what would be the best thing to do to get it ready for the big hits of juice????

thanks for the help.

Re: 351w+nitrous

For what it's worth- I'd get a 3.85" stroke crank, some forged pistons out of a 5.0, use the stock rods out of the 351w. Speed-pro cam,(northern auto parts), Proffesional products intake (Madddog Racing), 650-750 cfm carb, and headers. This is about as budget as it gets, but should make some good horsepower and torque and hold up to a 200 shot for at least a few runs. This will probably make enough HP to break some other parts in a stock drivetrain.

Re: 351w+nitrous

When I say 'solid build' I mean all the fundamental things that would go into a 600hp engine with high cylinder pressure. Doug's suggestion of the 393W parts is good from the standpoint that the forged pistons (required) are available for considerably less money than forged 351W pistons and if your stock crank is in need of machining, can be nearly as cheap overall. At 200 NO2 you need to be very knowledgeable before you push that button. Read, read, read and read some more. Call the nitrous kit manufacturer (not dealer) for minimum recommendations. If you are going to lean on a bottle (or turbo or supercharger or...), you have to know what it takes to have it and the rest of the car hold together for more than a couple runs. That's more hard-core info than can be packed here and is available all over the internet, magazines, and telephone. One thing is for sure - you'll have fun!

Re: 351w+nitrous

[SIZE=2]Yeah I was kind of leaning towards a smaller stroke. Considering the fact that ill be using such a healthy of shot I don’t think the 408 would be needed at this point. The car will be set up with a c4 and the shot is going to be a two stage kit so 100 first stage and then 100 second stage! Not all at once and ass I progress/learn ill up the shots.

Thanks for all the help appreciated

Re: 351w+nitrous

PSIG brings up a lot of very good points-especially gathering all the information you can not only about about nitrous, but building a reliable foundation to support it. You will find out in short order that building a 600 hp motor and drivetrain that will live is not a budget deal. Consider that many nearly muscle cars in the 70's had little more than 200 hp stock. You are going to add this on top of probably 1 1/2 to 2 times more hp than most stock V-8's on motor only. There are pretty much 2 ways to go-a budget junk-yard build, close your eyes, cross your fingers, and pray the parts don't get in the cabin with you and run her 'till she blows. To go the other way requires a lot of money and knowledge to do it right. The sad truth is that even the best prepped motors and drivetrains turn loose at times and the smallest overlooked detail can cost thousands of dollars. This is especially true with nitrous shots over 100, whether applied at once or in stages. Run lean and even forged pistons will melt in short order. Not enough retard and the pistons can shatter. The point I'm trying to make is that at the level of horsepower and juice you are attempting on your first go-round, it is a lot easier to tear stuff up than get it right. Good luck and do as much homework as possible.
