Std. or H.V. Oil Pump?

In a 351W based stroker motor with a 7 quart oil pan, should you use a standard volume or a high volume oil pump?

Depends on your clearances, what did you set your motor up at?

What type / Weight of oil do you intend to run?

Re: Std. or H.V. Oil Pump?

I use a Melling HV pump on mine with my 7 quart Canton pan. I've read numerous times and seen personally a 10 psi gain between the standard and high volume oil pumps. Cold idle use to be 55 psi with the standard, 65psi with a HV pump

I don't know the clearances since I did not build the bottom end, but I am using Mobile 1 synthetic 10W30.
The reason I brought this issue up is because my rear main seal has now started leaking pretty bad. Before that, one of my valve cover gaskets pushed out. I still have the old factory oil pressure gauge so I don't know the exact psi, but it runs nearly "pegged out" much of the time. I've read where guys use standard volume pumps even with deep oil pans which made me wonder if my high volume pump is overkill and may be making a little too much pressure. I will be dropping the oil pan to take care of the rear main seal and figured this would be the time to change the pump if it would help.

Try running regular Dino Sauce, sometimes the Synthetic stuff makes parts that are a little worn or a little out of spec leak.

it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a decent mechanical gauge too.

Re: Std. or H.V. Oil Pump?

I highly doubt you are pushing out seals because of the oil pump. You have another issue like crank case pressure.

What's the best way to alleviate crank case pressure?
Up to this point I was running an open breather on each valve cover.
But today I finally found a grommet that is supposed to convert the "twist-in" hole in one of my M/T valve covers to a PCV valve. I won't know for sure if it will work until it gets here on Monday. My plan is to run an open breather on one valve cover and a PCV valve going to the base of the carb in the other.

Re: Std. or H.V. Oil Pump?

An open breather on both valve covers......

That explains everything. I say this because it's exactly what I did and just changing from 1 to 2 breathers slowed the rear oil leak I had. Now it pushes the dipstick up and sprays a little oil. I'm trying to hook my PCV into my carb spacer or drill a hole in my intake under the carb spacer.

Re: Std. or H.V. Oil Pump?

wow your pushing the dip stick out too? You have WAY too much CC pressure. This is caused by bad rings and I dont believe you are going to fix the issues untill you get rid of the blow by
