393 build

Recently, I read where a guy built a 393 W, and he said it was very easy and reasonable. Used the 351 W block and rods, 302 pistons and an aftermarket crank. Anyone know who makes such a crank, preferably a steel one?

Scat and Eagle - A forged crank is not really necessary.
For the price of a set of rods, you could go 408 or 418 since all of the other components cost the same. If you were planning to buy rods anyway then you could go 408 or 418 for the same money as a 393.
Just keep in mind that these strokers need a good flowing set of heads to breathe and require a larger cam and carb than the 351 would.

I did build a 393 for a customer, I only did the 393 because I got a smoking deal on the forged internals. Like said before, for pretty much the same money you can get a 408 or 418. And if you want to make big power, x2 on the big heads, your feeding big block cubes with small block heads.

These guys would be happy to help... Coast High Performance: Ford, Chevy, Stroker Kits, Short Blocks, Long Blocks, Crate Engines
Good luck,

Rick

Re: 393 build

The first stroker i built was just that.
A stock bore 351w (387 ci)
The stock 351w truck rods (football style)
And stock bore forged 302 pistons.
I got me a el cheapo crank off ebay , cast steel. Think was a Hawks?
Biggest thing I ran into was the shops here balance Chevy's mainly.
They are used to having to add weight to balance.
Took them 2 weeks to figure out they needed to drill some weight out of the crank to get it to balance.
I was pleased with it. Was a low low budget motor. Ran a set of old ported DOOE heads. It made the old mustang feel like a go cart.
Ran a solid flat tappet cam with duration of around 255 @ .050.

Re: 393 build

The idea behind this build is that it is supposed to be cheap..Problems you may run into are balancing the assembly and piston skirt interference with the crank or connecting rods...If you can solve these problems yourself it might be worth while..If you have to pay a shop to fix them you are probably better off to go with a kit like a scat 408 assembly...
