418 clevor

This coming spring i will be starting an engine build strictly for drag racing.
Base block:351 winsor-1969 factory.
Heads: cleavland 4v- am planning on porting the exhaust side(just to smooth the exit)
Rotating Assy: All forged.
Compression: 13.5-13.7 (going to run e85 fuel)
Injection: will be using electronic fuel injection (megasquirt!!!!)
Throttle Body: 1375cfm (FAST technologies)
Cam: ????????? Thinking about a custom grind somewhere around a high .600, or low .700 lift. not really sure of duration yet.

Looking for some creative criticism....Ideas???? comments?????

Looking for around 750hp, maybe more????????

DREAMER--It sounds like this is your first race engine build. If it is, you dont have to worry about 750 or more horsepower

Re: 418 clevor

dreaming????NOT!!! Already have block and heads. found intake through Kaase. they're manufactured by CHI in Australia. Working with a very experienced engine builder!!!!!!!!

My goal is a realistic 750hp on a budget. something like $6000-6500.00

If this was my first build i wouldn't be putting this into a 1990 VW golf!!!!!!!!

Re: 418 clevor

Okay, You've got a block and heads. You are going to run factory iron heads with only the exhaust side ported. You want 750+ HP. That is going to take around 1.8hp per cubic inch at 418ci. You asking for a lot and you are limiting the budget to $6000-6500.

Constructive criticism?
Lower your HP goal or raise you budget.....a lot.

750hp would require a very serious race engine...Your not gonna get there with those parts without a lot of nitrous...

Re: 418 clevor

Just to give you some idea what it takes to make 750HP. I wouldn't want to rely on a factory 351W block.

Megasquirt has been a pain in the @ss for the two people I know that have tried it. One is a mechanical engineer, the other is a PE with a computer science degree. The volumetric tables are what both have had issues with.

At F/M we have seen the desire for 600-750hp often. It's possible but a dream for most of us. It just isn't that easy or cheap. I'm guessing most that throw those numbers out don't even realize what 400hp is capable of.
We have a budget Fox with a budget 351W that has run a best of 11.38 and that scares me. I doubt the thing has any more than 400HP. I can't even imagine 750hp especially in anything with less than a very well pro prepped chassis.

I'm not one to "rain on someones parade" but hang around for a while, you will learn a lot.

Hint:
When Joe Sherman speaks, I generally listen even when he seems like he's just being a grumpy old fart.

Re: 418 clevor

Megasquirt does take some time to get used to. Once you learn to use it's software, it can be a pretty powerfull little cheep unit. the first car I installed it into was a 1990 VW golf. The engine was pretty much stock, except for an aftermarket throttlebody. Took an engine that had a factory HP of 128 at the crank, and tuned 142 hp at the TIRES!!!!!! most hp gained trough adding timing. Once a person learnes how to manipulate megasuirts tables, alot of good can be done!!!!!! As far as the 418 build; the 4v head porting will be mostly concentraited on the exhaust side due to the large "bubble" in the factory exhaust port. the heads will be ported on both the intake and exhaust sides. CHI builds a manifold that uses the 4500 carb mount plate that is designed to flow with the 4v cleavland heads. Planning on building 2.125-2.25 id headers. the camshaft grind is the one thing that i'm not really sure where i'm going to end up......

Re: 418 clevor

One thing that also needs to be taken into consideration is that we're going to be running 13.5-1 compression, burning e85 fuel. This compression level with e85 has added 15-25% more power on atleast 4 engines that i have personal knowledge of..... Sometimes you have to think outside of the box or progress is never made!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 418 clevor

With only 4 posts on this forum.........I don't know if you know or heard of Joe Sherman. He's got alot more experience than most of us on this forum. He builds alot of bad azz motors. So I advise you to be open minded, sit back, and absorb. I would think some Aluminum AFR or TW TFS FAC heads would better suite your quest for the hp you are after. It's not about flow #'s, it's about the entire combination.
