Lowering Block Kit Installation

After getting my suspension together I noticed that my rear end sat an inch higher then the front so I decided to fix it.

I chose a lowering kit since my leaf springs were in good shape and could not afford to get different ones.

I purchased the kit for around $25.00 at Autozone, a local auto parts store.

To do the installation I needed to do a couple of things.

1) Put a jack under the pumpkin and proceeded to remove the nuts from the U bolts and rear shocks.

2) After removing the nuts I proceeded to remove the plate that the shocks and U bolts attach to.

3) Remove the U bolts being careful that the pumpkin doesn't move around a lot.

4) Added the blocks into position and discovered that the new U bolts that came with the kit would not fit into the attaching plate.

5) Since my original ones were not long enough once I added the blocks and no one had any in stock locally I ended up going to the local junkyard, Pick-n-Pull.

6) Proceeded to get 2 sets, $2.50 each, from a 1994 or 1997 Ford Ranger since the dimensions were the same as my original but they were longer.

7) Cleaned up and installed the U bolts, attaching plate and shocks and tightened everything up.

8) Trimmed the U bolts using a grinder with a cut off wheel since they were longer then the original ones.

9) Let the car settle and measured and we were level with the front, so it worked...

These are pictures of the rear driver side before the lowering block installation

Tools I Used:
* Wrench/Socket Set
* Grinder
* Jack

Estimated Cost (no discounts applied)
* Lowering Kit: 25.00
* U Bolts: 10.00 (4 * 2.50)

Total Cost: $35.00

Disclaimer:
I do not claim that this is the best way to do this, or even if you should do this, but rather that this is what I have done. Your cost, results and satisfaction may vary.

Re: Lowering Block Kit Installation

I am glad you could find the kit at AutoZone. My local Autozone did not have that fit my axle. Got my kit from NPD.

Hello,

I was referring to the rear differential.
The round part where the drive shaft connects, which is kinda shaped like a pumpkin. It's one of those terms that I picked up somewhere and ended up adding to my car part vocabulary .

Re: Lowering Block Kit Installation

i got pretty lucky I only needed 3/4" when I installed/made my lowering blocks. and my caltrac U bolts had just enough on them to make them fit. Good info on the ranger U bolts though I will save that for a rainy day.

Re: Lowering Block Kit Installation

BTW, NAPA sells several different diameter U-bolts and they often come in longer than stock passenger car lengths. Less than $10 each.

Hello,

They should.
I have a pair of standard replacement shocks on mine and no problems.
