Aftermarket Floor Shifter Mounting Pad

Since I was adding new carpet to my 1973 Torino, I thought it was a good time to do a little cleaner install of my floor shifter. When I originally installed a Hurst Quarter Stick, I did a pretty good botch job on the carpet. I also didn't like how low the shifter sat since it was bolted directly to the floorboard. After some pondering at work one day, I came up with this simple solution.

Picture 1
I picked up some box channel tubing from Home Depot and got out my Sawz-All.

Picture 2
I cut two segments of box channel and positioned them on the floor board.

Picture 3
I test fitted the shifter to make sure it wouldn't hit the dashboard.

Picture 4
I prepped the floor to weld on the box channels pieces.

Picture 5
I made some nice little welds to the floor and tapped the box channel to accomodate the floor shifter pattern.

Picture 6
I layed the new carpet in and cut cleanly around the box channel segments.

Picture 7
I tightened down the shifter.

Picture 8
I finished by connecting the shift cable and adding the cover. I liked the new position and since the carpet didn't sit totally flush against the floorboard you couldn't even tell the shifter was raised up.

Final Thought
This also allows you to mount the shifter without getting under the car, which can be tough to tighten bolts when the tranny is installed.

Nice. The carpet looks good too, where'd you get it?

Excellent! Thank you for sharing. I happen to be mounting (again) my ProStick AND have some square stock in the garage.
