Tech Magnets to Aid Filtration

I've been reading here and on other forums about buying Neodium magnets to put on your oil filter and oil pan. You don't have to buy them! There are thousands of them for free. All you need is a junk hard drive.

You will need a Torx 8 screwdriver, maybe a Torx 7 also for some drives. Remve the top. (Note)There are hidden screws under the stickers.

The magnets are in the corner at the end of the pickup arm. There may be screws holding the magnet assembly. Very old drives like this 5 Gig only have one magnet but most have 2. Get the assembly out any way you like.

Put them in a vise and bend the backing plate to loosen the glue.

Slip a screwdriver under it and you have a free magnet. (Warning!! Some of these magnets are VERY strong and will jump. Watch out for pinched fingers) Another source for smaller ones come from CD/DVD drives. The optical laser uses small magnets for focusing. These work great on drain plugs. Every motor I have has a magnetic drain plug. You must JB Weld them if you have a steel drain pan. Aluminum blocks like motorcycles don't require it but is safer. You can put them on the outside of your oil filter or on the bottom of your oil pan. If you use them on the oil pan you should remove them before draining the oil. This will let the bad stuff drain out. I hope this will be of use. Let me know if you find other uses for these magnets.

Re: Magnets

You should try taking the magnets out of old 5.25 inch SCSI drives. They make the ones out of newer drives look TINY! I played with them enough to know that it hurts like HELL if you slip with them. I had a NICE BIG blood blister to prove it too.

Re: Tech Magnets to Aid Filtration

So far I have used HDD magnets to aid in fitting my replacement fireall and to help keep fender covers from sliding away.

If you use these things to put the pictures your kids drew on to the refrigerator you will proabaly pull the 'fridge over on its side before you get the magnet off.

These critters stick!
