Tuning Case

Like the man in the blue pants said "No project is too simple for the Tech Exchange"...
This is Just a small thing that saved me time and money and I thought it can be useful and help some of you.
I'm in college now and to be able to keep my mustang I have to work full time job, working from 8:00AM to 17:00 and go to classes from 18:00 to 23:00 not leaving me a lot of time to work on my car, so coming back from college (about 40 miles from home) in the middle of the night become the best time for me to do the stuff that not required (necessarily) daylight and not making to much noise, like changing the timing, recurving, rejeting, playing with the AOD kickdown cable etc...
Most of those things will cause you to go in and out the car several times, and after a long long day it is just a meter of time till you will leave something behind...
I left my 120$ MSD timing light and some other tools and had to buy them again instead of buying new things I need so I decided to make a kind of tool box for this things that I dont have to carry with me in the everyday tool box and that will help me to notice if something is missing, pluse it has to be soft to protect the vacume gauge and the new (plastic) timing light.
I found in a local hardware store aluminum suitcase, it was in a reasonable price ( about 20$) and looked right for the job

I gathered around the gauges and the other things I wanted in the case to have a general idea how to use the case space

The aluminum case had some divisions in it

I took it out and measured the wide and length of the case

I bought a sheet of sponge it is about 1" thick

I cut the sheet to the size of the case, I wanted it to be a tite fit so I left 2mm extra.
I had to use 3 layers of the sponge sheets because the case is about 3" deep

Now I had to make all the things I wanted in to fit in the case so I just played with it till I found the right position for every thing.

I used big marker and just marked around the tools, then I used a sharp blade to cut around my marks, then I used a carpet glue to glue the sponge sheets to the case so they will not come out every time I take a tool...
** Take a piece of needless sponge and verify the glue is not not "eating" the sponge.

Finely, a useful use for my books...

Found a small julery box for the small things like the MSD stop bushing and springs.

I used the uper side of the case for the compression gauge hose and the AOD T.V hose. The yellow thing you can see is the rest of the glue.

For a custom look, I made a template with my car name, I used just a lite paper glue to hold it on the upper sponge sheet while I paint it.

I spray paint it in black, I had to paint it several times till I got a good even color, dont forget to cover parts you don't want to paint.
**It is a good idea to spray on a separate piece of the sponge sheet just to verify the paint is not "eating" the sponge .

I remove the "Alice" template I maid and it left a good white color while every thing else was black, including me...

All Done! Now I have a case that will protect my diagnostic tools and if I'll forget something outside I will see some thing is missing in the case.
That took only an hour and a half, it was fun and it looks cool too

You can use the stickers you like

I like the clean aluminum look...

Re: Tuning Case

Thanks guys, it was fun making it.

Gary, "Genius" is not exactly what I felt when I realized I left my timing light on the sidewalk...
But, I heard Einstein was a dropout so, I guess I still have a chance
