86 headrest removal

What’s the secret in removing the headrest on ’86 bucket seats? I pulled and pulled and it doesn't want to come off. Is there a release some where I need to be messing with? If so, where is this some where at? How do I go messing with it?

86 headrest removal

I have an '88 and they work the same way.Ford has a special tool,we don't.I had to pull the seat cover up and reach up into the seat from the front bottom, and there's a tab that catches in a slot in the headrest slider (the metal part that goes into the seat). You have to pry it up with a screwdriver and then pull the headrest out.I pulled the seat out,and removed the seat back to get this done.It was a lot of work for such a small job.The foam in the seat back sandwiches this tab I speak of.You will know what I'm talking about when you see it.

Thanks Vinnie. I was kinda hoping someone else would jump in with another way of doing this. Do you know what this special tool looks like? I thinking about stopping by the upholstery shop and see if they would take a stab at it. If they want an arm or a leg or both, I will be taking the seat apart myself. The headrest just looks too big in my Falcon. Again thanks for the advice and support

No problem.I'm sure that a shop would have a tool, but, perhaps they just remove the seat cover as well. You may not have to completely remove the cover, just enough to get your hand and a standard screwdriver in there. You may even be able to just fold the seat forward with the cover on the back part unzipped. You have nothing to lose by trying. If I can help in any way,let me know.

On your 88 it's either a long thin tape of metal like an in dash CD player remover, or a round thin rod slid down the top through a hole in the neck where the headrest goes through. IIRC
