fuel consumption

My 1995 T-Bird runs well, but does not get the gas mileage that my 04 Crown Vic can get. It won't go into 4th gear till about 50 mph. Can this be the problem, and is there a cure?

Your tranny should shift into OD or 4th at 45 to 47 MPH, that's what I see in most AOD trannies...

Not likely to make you loose MPG.

Thanks for resolving the shift point question. My Crown Vic has the same size engine, but gets better mileage. It is heavier also.
